The Government Ensures Focus on Recovering Infrastructure and Housing Affected by the Sumatra Disaster

Jakarta – The government has confirmed that all efforts are now focused on restoring infrastructure and housing for communities affected by floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The emergency response phase has shifted to comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction, with the goal of restoring the lives of affected residents as quickly as possible.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno stated that the rehabilitation and reconstruction plan had been in preparation since early December. “Preparations for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase have begun, with the target being 100 days,” he said at a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta.

He further explained that recovery does not only include repairing roads and bridges, but also preparing temporary and permanent housing for victims whose houses were damaged or destroyed.

Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf emphasized that the government’s current priority is providing temporary housing (huntara) and permanent housing (huntap) for residents who have lost their homes.

“BNPB will directly lead the coordination of shelter provision, and permanent housing will of course be prepared,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, stated that the rehabilitation process has officially entered the recovery phase in a number of affected areas, such as West Sumatra, after the initial emergency response phase.

The government is also accelerating improvements to road access, bridges, ports, and airports to ensure smooth distribution of aid, logistics, and the mobility of residents and emergency response teams.

According to Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, efforts to improve transportation infrastructure are a priority so that connectivity and public services can return to normal.

On the logistical side, aid distribution efforts are also supported by various parties, including the military and volunteers, to ensure that disaster victims’ basic needs, such as food, water, and shelter, are met.

The government has expressed its commitment to ensuring that the rehabilitation and reconstruction process is carried out transparently, expeditiously, and in coordination with local governments, relevant institutions, and community stakeholders. The priority is not only to assist victims in the short term, but also to rebuild housing and infrastructure to better standards to be more resilient to potential future disasters.
