Security in Papua is still the government’s top priority, especially facing threats from the separatist group Free Papua Organization (OPM). Ahead of the simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) in 2024, the government’s firm commitment to eradicating OPM aims to maintain stability and protect communities threatened by violence. The TNI and Polri have taken strategic steps to ensure the presence of effective security forces in the region, emphasizing the importance of a balanced security approach with development efforts and dialogue.
In this context, the firm steps taken by the TNI and Polri should be appreciated. TNI Headquarters has confirmed that there will be no withdrawal of troops from Papua after the successful operation to free Susi Air pilot, Philip Mark Mehrtens, who was taken hostage by OPM. This shows that the presence of security forces in Papua is not just to respond to crisis situations, but also to ensure broader security and order for the community.
Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Hariyanto, emphasized that the presence of TNI soldiers and Polri personnel in Papua is part of efforts to assist the government in improving development and community welfare. This is in line with the view that security is an important prerequisite for sustainable development.
The importance of maintaining security in Papua cannot be underestimated. The existence of OPM and separatist activities that disrupt stability in the Papua region have caused significant social impacts. Research professor from the Regional Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Cahyo Pamungkas said that the approach taken by the TNI and Polri must consider handling conflict holistically, which does not only rely on military approaches, but also pays attention to the social and economic aspects of society.
The soft approach applied in the release of pilot Philip Mark Mehrtens can also be used as a model in dealing with OPM. This approach succeeded in ensuring the safety of victims without sacrificing lives, which shows that dialogue and negotiation can be an effective solution in complex situations. Community involvement in this process is very important, because they are the parties most affected by the conflict.
Apart from that, the success of the TNI and Polri in arresting suspected OPM members shows that there are real synergy and collaboration efforts in eradicating separatist groups. Commander of Kolakops Korem 182/JO RI-PNG Pamtas Task Force Battalion 642/KPS, Colonel Inf Aswin said that his party appreciated the TNI and Polri institutions for their success in arresting a DPO in the murder case in Bintuni Bay. This success not only indicates strengthening the security position, but also reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing the law in conflict-prone areas.
The surrender of a number of OPM members and sympathizers also shows that there is an opportunity for reconciliation. Through intensive territorial development efforts, the government can open up space for dialogue for those who want to return to the fold of the Republic of Indonesia. This is a very positive step, because it indicates that there is hope for reducing tensions in Papua.
The importance of cooperation between the TNI, Polri and local governments in dealing with the problem of separatism is very clear. Consistent law enforcement that is responsive to local dynamics is the key to creating a sense of security in society. By involving the public in the security process, the government not only creates a safe situation, but also builds public trust in the state.
Stable security conditions in Papua will not only have a positive impact on development in the region, but will also increase public trust in the government. This is very important ahead of the 2024 simultaneous regional elections, where political stability and security are absolute requirements for the implementation of peaceful elections. The existence of the TNI and Polri as security guarantors is very crucial in preventing potential disturbances that might arise.
However, in the journey towards stability, the government also needs to recognize the importance of a more inclusive approach. Touching the root of the problems faced by the Papuan people, such as injustice, economic inequality and neglect of the rights of indigenous peoples, is a strategic step in reducing support for separatist groups. By carrying out equitable development and paying attention to local aspirations, the government can create a climate that is more conducive to peace and stability.
In facing existing challenges, the government’s firm commitment to eradicating OPM is a step that must be supported by all elements of society. This support is very important so that the steps taken can be effective and on target. Papua is an integral part of the Republic of Indonesia, and maintaining security in this region is a shared responsibility.
With the spirit of mutual cooperation and synergy between the government, TNI, Polri and society, Papua can become a safe and prosperous region. Therefore, let’s support the government’s efforts to eradicate OPM in order to create security stability in Papua. Success in handling conflict and maintaining peace is the key to sustainable development and improving the welfare of the Papuan people.
