The Illusion of the Pig Party Film: Papua’s Economic Development Has Maintained Ecological Balance

Jayapura — The government continues to direct economic development in Papua while maintaining ecological balance and environmental and community sustainability. Therefore, the film “Pig Party” is considered to present a narrative that does not fully reflect reality.

Expert Staff for Economics and Development, Herman Kayame, stated that the government continues to strengthen various programs aimed at preserving Papua’s natural ecosystem while improving the welfare of the local community. According to him, development in Papua is not only focused on economic aspects, but also ensures environmental sustainability.

“The main principle is economic development that maintains ecological balance in a sustainable manner,” Herman stated at the subnational level socialization event for Indonesia’s Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030.

This activity is a strategic step by the Central Papua Provincial Government to support global climate change mitigation efforts.

According to Herman, this socialization activity is an important initial step in broadening understanding of regional contribution targets in supporting the national commitment to environmental management and sustainable development.

“Therefore, going forward, this program will continue to be expanded, including coastal area restoration to protect marine ecosystems, strict monitoring of forest use to ensure it remains functional, and routine forest protection with the involvement of local indigenous communities as the vanguard,” he said.

This momentum is expected to spark the active participation of all elements, from government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, and the wider community, in supporting sustainable development and environmental management programs.

“Through this important moment, we hope to foster strong collaboration to achieve the national Net Sink target for the forestry sector and other land uses by 2030,” said Herman.

Herman believes that local knowledge and traditional wisdom possessed by local communities can strengthen conservation efforts while maintaining a balance between natural resource utilization and ecosystem preservation.

The public is urged to remain cautious of provocative narratives that can create misunderstandings regarding development and environmental issues, including through content like the film “Pesta Babi.” Open dialogue and balanced information are considered crucial to maintaining peaceful and sustainable development in Papua.
