The Majority of the Public Believes Indonesia Will Remain Consistent in Defending Palestine

Jakarta – Indonesia has consistently defended Palestine, supporting its independence and sovereignty based on a two-state solution. This commitment remains steadfast, even after Indonesia joined the Board of Peace (BoP) in the United States in early 2026, which aims to promote a just peace in Gaza.

In its diplomacy, the Indonesian Government, through President Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister Sugiono, emphasized that participation in the Peace Council is a space to fight for Palestine, not to weaken it.

The high level of public support for Indonesia’s stance is reflected in a survey by the Median Survey Institute, which released findings on social media respondents’ perceptions of Indonesia’s membership in the Peace Council. The majority of respondents still believe the Indonesian government remains consistent in its support of Palestine despite its membership in the Peace Council.

A survey conducted by the Median Survey Institute in February 2026 showed that 55.7% of respondents believed the government remained consistent in defending Palestine. The government still commands the trust of the majority of the Indonesian public regarding its commitment to defending Palestine, despite the controversial decision to join the Board of Peace (BoP).

However, the same survey also revealed concerns among the public. As many as 66.2% of respondents expressed concern that Indonesia’s membership in the BoP would weaken its position in defending Palestine. Furthermore, 67.7% believed the BoP would benefit the United States and Israel.

The survey, conducted from February 10-14, 2026, involved 1,200 respondents from all provinces. The survey used a Google Forms-based questionnaire distributed to respondents on social media platforms, targeting active social media users aged 17-60 and above.

“We created the questions in a Google Form. Then we distributed them to the provinces. After that, we received responses, and we contacted those who provided answers again to ensure the content was accurate,” said Ade Irfan Abdurahman, Research Director of the Median Survey Institute.

Previously, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia consistently supports Palestinian independence within the framework of the Two-State Solution to resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel.

This policy is a constitutional mandate and a long history of support dating back to the time of President Sukarno. Constitutional support for Palestinian independence is enshrined in the first paragraph of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution: “Indeed, independence is the right of all nations, and therefore, colonialism must be abolished throughout the world.” Supporting Palestinian independence is part of the state’s commitment to not tolerate human rights violations.
