Bogor – President Prabowo Subianto introduced the ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, Beautiful) Indonesia Movement as a national initiative to support waste management and environmental management.
The idea was conveyed at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of the Central and Regional Governments at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor Regency, West Java.
In his directive, the President explained that the ASRI Indonesia Movement is aimed at encouraging the involvement of government agencies and the community in developing the habit of regularly maintaining environmental cleanliness.
The President emphasized that this movement can be realized through simple steps taken collectively.
“I asked what clean means? It means clean, orderly, and so on. This is just a name, let’s say, but in practice, all government agencies must lead the cleanup. Schoolchildren are fine. In the morning, it takes 10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour. If there are hundreds of thousands, that’s fast,” said the President.
The President also highlighted the increasingly critical waste problem in various regions. He stated that projections indicate that almost all final disposal sites (TPA) in Indonesia are likely to experience overcapacity in the coming years.
“This waste is a problem. It is projected that almost all landfills will reach overcapacity by 2028, or even sooner,” he said.
As part of the handling measures, the government is targeting the development of 34 waste-to-energy projects in 34 cities by 2026. The President said the program is expected to reduce the waste load in landfills while generating energy for the community.
“Waste is a disaster, waste is a disease. We will take action, we will support it, ladies and gentlemen. This is 34, we’ll start immediately. As soon as we have the money, we’ll direct it here too. How can we sell, how can we expect tourism, if our environment is not good, dirty, and filthy?” said the President.
The President also introduced the idea of a “roofing” project as an effort to beautify residential areas. According to the President, the widespread use of zinc roofs makes the environment look untidy and creates heat for residents.
“This zinc is hot for residents, and it also rusts. So, Indonesia wouldn’t be beautiful if all roof tiles were made of zinc,” said the President.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia, Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, expressed his support for the ASRI Indonesia Movement.
He assessed that the program was in line with the Green Village agenda currently being implemented by the DPD RI together with the Ministry of Villages and Disadvantaged Regions.
“We should appreciate and support President Prabowo’s efforts to specifically address the issue of waste. We believe that waste is a potentially societal issue if we manage it together using a technological approach,” Sultan concluded.
