Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to form an independent investigative team to follow up on the 17+8 demands voiced by the people following the massive demonstrations in August 2025 received widespread acclaim. The public viewed the move as demonstrating the government’s firm stance and openness in absorbing public aspirations.
The President’s commitment to resolving this issue is seen not only as a response to social unrest, but also as evidence of the government’s adherence to the principles of justice and transparency. In this dynamic environment, this policy represents a response to public concerns and a concrete manifestation of efforts to maintain a healthy democracy.
Democratic Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) expressed his full support for the formation of an independent investigative team. He argued that the decision would prevent public confusion caused by the conflicting information currently circulating widely.
AHY believes a comprehensive investigation is crucial to ensure a complete understanding of each incident, eliminating the possibility of slander, false news, or conspiracy theories that could disrupt national harmony.
AHY also emphasized that as a democratic country, Indonesia should ensure that the people’s aspirations are conveyed in accordance with the constitution, laws, and applicable regulations.
AHY views the formation of an independent team as a wise step to ensure all parties receive a clear and fair picture of the fatal incident. This way, the public can regain peace of mind with verified information.
Similar support came from interfaith figures within the National Conscience Movement (NAM). Former Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin stated that President Prabowo had directly approved the formation of an independent investigative team.
Lukman emphasized that the President’s willingness to discuss each aspiration in detail demonstrates the government’s commitment to responding to public concerns. He stated that the technical details and format of this team will be further communicated by the Palace, but the President’s political commitment is already very clear.
From an academic perspective, the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) views the President’s decision as a strategic step reflecting a commitment to upholding justice. According to the institute, cases that have resulted in numerous casualties should not be simply forgotten or buried, as this would leave deep scars on the nation. Instead, an open and independent investigation would strengthen the maturity of Indonesian democracy and reaffirm public trust in the state.
Indef emphasized the need to ensure that anyone found guilty receives appropriate punishment according to the law. This way, the public can see that the state is present to uphold justice without discrimination.
Indef also encourages the investigation process to be carried out transparently and the results to be accessible to the public, because only through openness can public trust be maintained.
The President’s move to form an investigative team not only responds to public demands, but also demonstrates that the government prioritizes the people’s aspirations.
