The public is urged not to be provoked by the issue of rejecting the title of hero for Soeharto

Jakarta – The government has reiterated the importance of public maturity in responding to the awarding of the title of National Hero to the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto.

This award was given on Heroes’ Day, November 10, 2025, through Presidential Decree Number 116/TK/2025, and is an important momentum for the nation to honor the services of figures who have contributed greatly to national unity, political stability, and economic development.

Despite calls for opposition, the government urged the public not to be provoked by issues that could divide unity. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that pros and cons are part of the public’s aspirations in a democratic country, but the public must prioritize national interests above differences of opinion.

“Let’s see the positive, see the good, and appreciate the services of our predecessors,” said Hadi.

Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the awarding of the title of National Hero was carried out professionally through a verification process by the Council for Titles, Medals, and Honors. He urged the public to respond objectively and wisely to this policy, while also respecting the nation’s past leaders.

“Let us be wise and mature as a nation, respect and appreciate the services of our predecessors,” he stressed.

Similar support was expressed by the Chairman of the Title Council, Fadli Zon, who emphasized that Soeharto’s coronation had been a long process, from the regional level to the central government, including a rigorous public review. He emphasized that Soeharto’s contributions to economic stability, infrastructure development, poverty alleviation, and role in maintaining national sovereignty were highly deserving of recognition.

“There is no evidence to support the allegations of his involvement in corruption cases or serious human rights violations,” explained Fadli Zon.

Survey data from the KedaiKOPI Institute and the Intelligence and National Security Studies (INSS) show that more than 80 percent of the public supports awarding Suharto the title of National Hero. This fact reinforces the government’s position that the award reflects the will of the people and serves as official recognition of Suharto’s significant contributions to national development.

Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives and public figure, Nurul Arifin, also expressed his appreciation for the government’s move. He emphasized that conferring the title of National Hero on Suharto was a recognition of his significant contributions to building Indonesia. Nurul reminded the public to respond calmly to this incident and not be provoked by politically motivated allegations of rejection.

“This award is not only a symbol of respect, but also a reminder of the importance of continuing national development. Let us appreciate the services of previous leaders with maturity and wisdom,” said Nurul.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto officially conferred this title on Soeharto at the State Palace. The awarding of the title of National Hero to Soeharto, known as the Father of Development, is expected to inspire future generations to emulate his dedication to building Indonesia.

The government emphasized that the public should not be provoked by the emerging issues of rejection, because this award was carried out legally, professionally, and based on real contributions to the nation.

The government calls on all levels of society to maintain order, respect official state decisions, and prioritize national unity above differences of opinion.

With a wise and mature attitude, appreciation for Soeharto will be a momentum to strengthen the sense of nationalism, while encouraging the younger generation to understand the importance of the contribution of every leader in the journey of Indonesian history.
