Traditional Leaders and Communities Voice Support: Soeharto Deserves to Be Named a National Hero

Jakarta — This year’s Heroes Day serves as a moment of reflection for the Indonesian people to once again honor those who dedicated their lives to the nation. Amid the spirit of unity and respect for the country’s heroes, support for granting the title of National Hero to Indonesia’s second president, H. M. Soeharto, continues to grow. A number of traditional leaders, community organizations, and youth groups have declared that Soeharto deserves the nation’s highest honor for his dedication and contributions in safeguarding Indonesia’s unity and advancing national development.

The Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Young Generation of Sisingamangaraja XII (AMS XII), Paulus Sinambela, emphasized that Soeharto was a leader who set an example of devotion and commitment to nation-building. He noted that during Soeharto’s leadership, Indonesia experienced political, economic, and social stability while national development progressed in a planned and inclusive manner.

“During his administration, the nation’s economy, politics, culture, and development ran smoothly. There was no unrest or turmoil — everything was calm and orderly,” Paulus said.

Paulus further reminded that Soeharto’s long journey in Indonesia’s history did not begin with his presidency but with his role as a freedom fighter.

“He once served as the bodyguard of General Sudirman during the struggle against the Dutch. Soeharto also led the Mandala Command for the Liberation of West Irian on January 11, 1962. Moreover, he defended Indonesia from the G30S/PKI movement and became a key figure in instilling Pancasila values across the nation,” he explained.

Paulus asserted that granting Soeharto the title of National Hero is both appropriate and long overdue as a form of state appreciation for his contributions.

“We, from AMS XII, fully support the initiative of the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) to realize this noble goal,” he affirmed.

Similar support came from the Central Executive Board of KOSGORO (PPK KOSGORO). Its Chairman, Hayono Isman, declared full and objective support for bestowing the National Hero title upon Soeharto. He described Soeharto as a leader who not only maintained national stability but also upheld Pancasila as the state ideology amid global political and ideological challenges.

“We, from PPK KOSGORO, express our full support for Soeharto to be named a National Hero in 2025,” Hayono stated.

According to Hayono, Soeharto demonstrated exceptional dedication in preserving national unity and guiding Indonesia through times of global uncertainty. He added that Soeharto’s voluntary resignation in May 1998 reflected the noble character of a true statesman.

“Soeharto showed great integrity by stepping down as President of the Republic of Indonesia to preserve national unity and prevent division,” he said.

Hayono underscored that the courage to make difficult decisions for the sake of national harmony represents the highest form of leadership sacrifice.

“That is the true spirit of heroism — placing the nation’s interests above personal ambition,” he added.

As the nation commemorates Heroes Day this year, voices from across society are becoming united in their conviction: it is time for Indonesia to bestow its highest honor upon Soeharto for his service and sacrifices. His example, dedication, and patriotic spirit continue to inspire future generations to uphold unity and build a stronger, more dignified Indonesia.
