UI Economics Lecturer: These are Indonesia’s Strategic Steps in Organizing the World Water Forum in Bali

Jakarta – World Water Forum (WWF) is the largest water sector forum or organization in the world with members from hundreds of countries, one of which is Indonesia. The emergence of WWF was motivated by the increasingly pressing issue of water resources which was not accompanied by preventative or reduction actions.

WWF regularly holds conferences attended by its members and this year, WWF held its 10th conference in Bali, Indonesia on 18-25 May 2024. This attracted the attention of many Indonesians.

The topics that will be raised are closely related to water resource issues which are important to be addressed in Indonesia and the main focus is realizing SGD 6, clean water and sanitation. With the presence of hundreds of representatives from foreign countries, the Bali regional government and the central government are expected to work together to take maximum advantage for the tourism industry, creative industry, MSMEs and other sectors.

“The 10th World Water Forum in Bali will focus on the theme ‘Water for shared prosperity’, pressing for access to clean water, sanitation, sustainable water management, and global cooperation to achieve SGD 6. It is hoped that this opportunity will produce real solutions for the tourism sector national, MSMEs, and increasing investment. “Indonesia as the host is committed to producing a Ministerial Declaration (MD) which contains three strategic things such as the Center of Excellence (COE) of the Water Resilience, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and the launch of World Lake Day,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Telisa Aulia Falianty as assistant to the president’s special staff.

According to him, this conference is certainly ‘tough’ for Indonesia because it must be able to create a good event so that it can be seen by other countries, realize several commitments, and must also be able to utilize this conference for the advancement of various sectors both locally and nationally.

The most important thing is that by holding the WWF conference in Indonesia, the emergence of a solution and appropriate action to overcome the issue of water resources which is increasingly becoming a scourge for the earth every day. Indonesia must also be an example of a country with good water resources management.

“The 10th WWF is an important moment to raise the water issue to a higher level and jointly find solutions to this issue. “With this forum, it is hoped that the forum’s objectives, namely increasing awareness regarding global water issues, encouraging the achievement of the SGD 6 target, and realizing concrete programs to improve water defense in the world can be achieved,” answered Prof. Telisa.

Therefore, he continued, Indonesia’s preparations for this event are certainly complete. Indonesia’s preparations include various strategic aspects that are crucial to ensuring the success of this event and its long-term benefits. The Indonesian government must be able to intensively coordinate various ministries, institutions and regional governments to ensure that all aspects of organizing this event are complete.

“One of the important and crucial things is related to access to clean water and sanitation in the local area, which is the main reason this forum was held,” he said.

One of the ministries that is the organizer and carries out the task is the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia (PUPR). His responsibility is quite large, especially in increasing public awareness of this forum and the issues raised.

“The PUPR Ministry must be able to prepare this forum well. The PUPR Ministry must be able to maximize the participation of related ministries/institutions, regional governments, the private sector, civil society and academics. This is aimed at enriching ideas and solutions to increase national water security, strengthen commitment, and increase accountability and transparency in water management. “Then the PUPR Ministry must also be able to take advantage of this opportunity as a platform for innovation in technology and intelligent water treatment systems,” continued the assistant special staff to the president.

It is hoped that holding the 10th World Water Forum in Bali can produce real solutions to overcome urgent water resource issues, increase global awareness about the importance of sustainable water management, and promote tourism, creative industries and MSMEs in Indonesia.

With the theme “Water for shared prosperity”, this conference is expected to become a platform for sharing knowledge, innovation and technology related to effective water management.

It is important for Indonesia to show its commitment to achieving SDG goal 6, namely access to clean water and sanitation for all. Good collaboration between government, the private sector, civil society and academics will be the key to the success of this event, as well as increasing national water security, strengthening commitment and increasing accountability and transparency in water management.

With these strategic steps, it is hoped that the World Water Forum in Bali can have a long-term positive impact on water resource management in Indonesia and the world.
