DPR: Discussion of Police Bill Open and Involves Many Figures
Jakarta – In an effort to maintain transparency, the government will invite legal experts, academics, and civil society to provide input on the discussion of the revision of Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police (UU Polri).
The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized that the public does not need to be provoked or speculate regarding the circulation of the Presidential Letter (Surpres) regarding the revision of the Indonesian National Police Law on social media. According to her, until now the DPR has not received an official document related to the revision.
“So we, the DPR leadership, have not received the Surpres. If there is a list of problem inventories (DIM) circulating, it is not an official DIM received by the DPR. We emphasize that,” said Puan.
Furthermore, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives asked the public to wait for the official document of the Indonesian National Police Bill that will be submitted by the government to the DPR. She emphasized the importance of examining official documents to avoid misinformation that could cause public unrest.
As part of efforts to realize better laws, the government will invite legal experts, academics, and civil society organizations in the discussion and regulation drafting process.
Hinca Panjaitan, a member of Commission III of the DPR, emphasized that Commission III will invite many experts who have the capacity to provide input on Indonesian police regulations. Transparency is the benchmark for his commission to discuss the Polri Bill.
“If the Polri Bill is later transferred to Commission III, the discussion will be carried out openly as we have done previously in the revision of the Criminal Procedure Code,” explained Hinca.
This is done so that the Polri Bill can answer the challenges of the times and strengthen professional police governance and in accordance with the principles of democracy and human rights.
The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, also ensured that the discussion of the revision of the Polri Law would be carried out openly and involve public participation.
Prabowo ensured that the bill discussed with the DPR would involve more figures, and the draft of the bill would be revealed to the public.
“Later I will discuss it transparently, there will be a hearing and the legal draft will be revealed to the public,” said President Prabowo.
