Government Ensures Firm Legal Steps Against OPM Perpetrators of Violence

Jayapura – The government, through the TNI and Polri, has confirmed its commitment to taking firm legal action against perpetrators of violence affiliated with the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

One of the current priority targets is Aske Mabel, a former member of the Indonesian National Police who is now the Commander of the TPNPB-OPM Kodap Balim Timur Yali-Yalimo.

It is known that Aske Mabel previously seized four AK-47 type weapons from the Yalimo Police, Papua Mountains, and was involved in various disturbing acts of violence.

Deputy Chief of the Papua Regional Police, Brigadier General Faizal Rahmadani, stated that Aske Mabel is now the main fugitive of the Law Enforcement Task Force (Gakkum) for the Cartenz 2025 Peaceful Operation.

In his direction to the Task Force personnel in Jayapura, Faizal emphasized to hunt down OPM.

“The order is clear: chase, capture dead or alive. You have more capabilities than DPO Aske Mabel,” he said.

This statement illustrates the seriousness of the authorities in taking firm action against anyone involved in separatist and violent actions in Papua.

The Papua Police together with the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force continue to coordinate to uncover the shooting case that killed five civilians in Yalimo Regency, Papua Mountains.

Faizal confirmed that strategic steps were being taken to capture Aske Mabel and his group, including through mapping, pursuit, and direct action in the field.

Support for the government’s firm steps came from various parties.

Member of Commission I of the DPR from the Golkar Faction, Dave Akbarshah Firkano, emphasized the importance of eradicating OPM to its roots to prevent further casualties.

“This eradication must target not only their activities, but also their ideology. The government needs to give full authority to the TNI to carry out this task,” he said.

A similar sentiment was expressed by senior Golkar Party politician Aburizal Bakrie, who said that tough action against the OPM was a step that must be taken to maintain the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

“There is no compromise for rebellion against the Republic of Indonesia. The move by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto to change the name of KKB to OPM is the right move. This shows the state’s firm stance against the threat of separatism,” he said.

Aburizal also reminded that although firm action is needed, the welfare approach should not be ignored.

He assessed that an approach that prioritizes economic and social development can create a conducive situation in Papua.

“Stable conditions allow people to carry out their activities calmly, so that their welfare can improve,” he added. []
