Nusa Dua, Bali is busy welcoming the implementation of the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly & Related Meetings which will be held from 20 to 24 March 2022. Indonesia is also ready to hold this international parliamentary event. President Joko Widodo is planned to attend as well as open this international parliamentary event.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union or IPU, is an international organization that houses the world’s parliaments of sovereign states. Thus, Bali will be visited by parliaments from various parts of the world.

Indonesia was entrusted to host the 144th IPU event, and as the host, of course all preparations were made, starting from the planned arrival of the delegates, the implementation of the session, to the end of the event and the return of the delegates. In addition, strict health protocols will be implemented, so that both delegates and the public can be protected from the spread of Covid-19.

In September 2021 ago, the readiness of the Indonesian Parliament to host the 2022 Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was stated through the signing of the MoU between the Indonesian Parliament and the IPU. The signing of the agreement was carried out in a bilateral meeting between the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, and IPU President Duarte Pacheco on the sidelines of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) in Vienna, Austria. At that time, the MoU was signed by the Secretary General of the DPR RI and the Secretary General of the IPU and witnessed by Puan Maharani and Durtae

The MoU explained that the IPU General Assembly will be held in Bali, Indonesia, on March 20-24, 2022 with strict health protocols, and in accordance with the development of the spread of the Covid-19 virus in early 2022.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Portugal, Rudy Alfonso, conveyed Indonesia’s readiness to hold this global-scale parliamentary event. This was done during a meeting with the President of the IPU, Duarte Pacheco Rudy. On the occasion, the Indonesian Ambassador also said that the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, was present in Bali to directly confirm the readiness for the implementation of the IPU.

Duarte Pacheco, who has served as President of the IPU since November 2020, responded very well and appreciated Indonesia for being willing to host this international parliamentary forum. The communication that was established with the leadership of the DPR RI was also established intensively. Duarte is expected to arrive in Bali on March 16, 2022.

To note, until now there are delegates from 120 countries who will attend the 144th IPU meeting in Bali, and it is possible that this number will still increase. However, all preparations were made so that each forum could be held safely. This of course raises the good name of the state and nation in the eyes of the international public.

The Indonesian people really appreciate the implementation of the 144th IPU, especially the readiness of the government, DPR RI, local government of Bali and all parties who collaborate so that international standard events can be carried out properly. This shows that with all efforts in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia is very ready to hold large and even global activities.
