TNI Law Revision Aligns National Defense System and Spirit of Reform
Jakarta – The revision of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Law (RUU TNI) is believed to be an effort to align the national defense system to adapt to the dynamics of the times. This was stated by Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Adies Kadir, in Jakarta some time ago.
Adies Kadir said that the ratification of Bill Number 34 of 2004 concerning the TNI was an absolutely necessary adaptive step. According to him, this regulatory change is not just a response to internal needs.
“This revision cannot be separated from the context of the rapid changes in the times. The world is entering an era of uncertainty, when the form of threats to sovereignty is no longer limited to physical invasion alone, but can be in the form of cyber threats, disinformation, transnational ideologies, energy crises, and ecological disasters,” said Adies.
The Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives is of the opinion that currently the global constellation is entering a vulnerable phase. Geopolitical tensions, energy crises, and trade wars triggered by United States President Donald Trump add to the long list of challenges faced by Indonesia.
“The role of the TNI as a national defense tool also needs to be modernized. The revision of this law, with all its dynamics, is an adaptive step aimed at aligning Indonesia’s defense system with the needs of the times,” he explained.
Previously, the Chairman of the Gerindra Party Faction of the DPR, Budisatrio Djiwandono emphasized that the revision of the TNI Law remains in line with the principle of civil supremacy and the spirit of reform. His party ensured that the revision did not conflict with democracy, but rather aimed at adjusting the TNI’s duties to the strategic needs of national defense.
“This revision is not a step backward in TNI reform, but is a form of adaptation to the dynamics of modern defense. We ensure that civil supremacy is maintained and there is no attempt to dominate the civil and political realms with the military,” said the Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the DPR.
According to him, the substance of the bill is far from what the public is worried about. He also regretted the disinformation circulating such as the issue regarding the dual function of the TNI.
“There is no attempt to restore the dual function of the TNI in the revision of the TNI Law. The Gerindra Faction guarantees that the revision of this law is in line with the spirit of reform,” he concluded.
