Various Parties Believe There is No Potential for ABRI Dual Function in the Revision of the TNI Law

Jakarta – The General Chairperson (Ketum) of GP Ansor, Addin Jauharudin, emphasized that there is no potential for ABRI’s dual function in the revision of the TNI Law, as feared by many parties. He admitted that he had read the articles in the revision.

“The fear of ABRI’s dual function needs to be reviewed, the article needs to be read in its entirety, that this is not like the New Order. In the New Order, the army had a parliament, now it doesn’t. I think it would be better if it were regulated,” he explained.

Addin explained that GP Ansor supports the revision of the TNI Law. According to him, this stance was conveyed long ago, precisely one day before it was ratified by the DPR.

“Yes, one day before the DPR’s decision, we stated our stance in support of the revision of the TNI Law,” said Addin.

His party also does not have a problem if until now there are still demonstrations rejecting the TNI Bill. Because the demonstration is also a citizen’s right. Most importantly, Ansor continues to support the TNI Bill.

Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Adies Kadir, also emphasized that this revision is not a rash legislative product. According to him, the DPR does not turn a blind eye to the public’s aspirations that want the TNI to remain professional and not return to the dual function era.

“This is certainly not a form of returning to the spirit of dual function or politicizing the military, but is a reflection of real needs in the field,” said Adies.

He added that the current defense and security challenges require maximum readiness from all elements of the nation, including military institutions.

Similarly, the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) also assessed that the revision of the TNI Law that was recently passed by the DPR would not bring Indonesia into the era of ABRI dual function like the New Order.

“It is not true that this will return to the New Order era of ABRI dual function. Indeed, the narrative circulating in the wider community is confusing and we actually have to be able to see patiently and in detail what the differences are from the previous law,” said AHY.

On the one hand, AHY understands that there are still many people who misunderstand all the articles in the TNI Law. Therefore, he hopes that the TNI Law can be socialized optimally so that the public knows the main purpose of the law.
