Jakarta – Indonesia reaffirmed its position as a pioneer in environmental diplomacy through the hosting of the 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference, held at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, from May 12 to 15, 2025. Amid discussions on inter-Islamic state diplomacy, the Indonesian Parliament introduced a significant breakthrough by implementing a plastic-free policy throughout the conference.

This initiative serves as a concrete manifestation of the House of Representatives’ (DPR RI) commitment to environmental preservation, while emphasizing that the issue of a green environment is inseparable from good governance and strong institutions—the central theme of this year’s conference: “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.”

Speaker of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, expressed Indonesia’s honor in hosting the 19th PUIC Conference and warmly welcomed all delegates. She underlined Indonesia’s vital role in promoting international collaboration, particularly in the area of sustainability.

“Through the DPR RI, Indonesia stands ready to act as a bridge in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and transformation among the parliaments of Islamic countries,” said Puan in her opening remarks.

This commitment, she added, is reflected in the execution of the forum—not only in terms of substance but also in its environmental responsibility.

DPR RI Secretary General Indra Iskandar added that the plastic-free policy was more than just symbolic—it was a firm declaration of Indonesia’s environmental stance. During the conference, no single-use plastic cups or bottles were allowed. All delegates received reusable tumblers, with drinking water stations set up throughout the venue.

“This is a tangible commitment that we proudly present to all Islamic parliaments gathered here in Jakarta,” Indra stated.

The policy was well-received by delegates, who praised Indonesia’s concrete actions in reducing plastic waste and promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle. This initiative has positioned Indonesia as a role model for sustainable practices that can be adopted by other countries in future international forums.

Through this approach, the 19th PUIC Conference has served not only as a space for diplomacy but also as a reflection of Indonesia’s forward-looking global leadership—focused on the future of the planet.
