Jakarta — The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), currently taking place at the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta, is not only addressing strategic issues concerning the Islamic world but also emphasizing the critical role of parliaments in promoting global peace—including efforts to resolve the conflict between India and Pakistan.

Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, in bilateral meetings with several parliamentary leaders from friendly nations, reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to global peace. These separate meetings were held with parliamentary leaders from Algeria, Bahrain, Oman, and the Czech Republic, who are attending the conference as observers.

“We have just held bilateral meetings with the parliamentary leaders of Algeria, Bahrain, Oman, and the Czech Republic. During the meetings, we discussed various international issues, including the importance of collective efforts to achieve peace among nations,” said Puan.

In the discussions, Puan also highlighted the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation in responding to global dynamics. She emphasized that parliaments play a strategic role as bridges of diplomacy and guardians of regional stability.

“There is no better solution than peace achieved through diplomacy and mutual understanding,” she affirmed.

Meanwhile, Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of the DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, added that Indonesia is ready to mediate several international conflicts. One of the issues in focus is the conflict between India and Pakistan.

“God willing, we are prepared to act as a peace mediator. We are not ignoring the existing conflicts, but we aim to see them from all perspectives and find common ground. Our focus is on peace-based solutions,” said Mardani.

He stressed that Indonesia will maintain neutrality and refrain from taking sides in any conflict, including the India-Pakistan conflict and others such as the Russia-Ukraine war.

The 19th PUIC Conference, held from May 12 to 15, 2025, is attended by over 450 delegates from 38 PUIC member states and 10 observer countries. With the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” the conference serves as a significant moment for parliaments in the Islamic world to strengthen solidarity and take an active role in promoting global peace and order.
