Jakarta – International relations expert Anton Aliabbas believes that the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) held in Jakarta is not merely a ceremonial event, but a strategic momentum to strengthen Indonesia’s parliamentary diplomacy on the global stage.

He stated that the trust placed in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) to host the conference is evidence of Indonesia’s significant role in the Islamic world.

“With the DPR serving as the host of the PUIC, it not only reaffirms its commitment to promoting active parliamentary participation in diplomacy, but also gives Indonesia an opportunity to continue advocating and reinforcing global solidarity for Palestine,” said Anton.

The 19th PUIC Conference is taking place at the Indonesian Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta from May 12 to 15, 2025, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of PUIC.

The forum is attended by 500 participants from the parliaments of OIC member states, including Secretaries-General.

Anton noted that the goal set by DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani—to push for concrete solutions in addressing global crises and the Palestinian independence struggle—can be achieved if collective spirit among PUIC members is effectively consolidated.

“Speaker Puan Maharani’s aim for PUIC to seek tangible solutions, including real support for Palestinian independence, can indeed be achieved,” he said.

He also praised the DPR’s attention to gender equality issues at the forum. “The DPR’s initiative to use PUIC as a platform to highlight women’s participation in Muslim-majority countries is also worthy of appreciation,” Anton added.

Echoing this, DPR RI Secretary General Indra Iskandar emphasized Indonesia’s role in promoting good governance among OIC parliaments.

“We hope that the PUIC meeting in Indonesia will produce strategic decisions that can strengthen Islamic parliaments in building global civilization and peace,” he said.

This year’s PUIC Conference is held under the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience”, and is expected to yield concrete recommendations in addressing global challenges.
