Ahead of Mayday, Beware of Provocations from Interest Groups

Jakarta – Ahead of the commemoration of International Workers’ Day or May Day on May 1, social dynamics in various regions are starting to show increased activity.

This momentum, which is actually a day of solidarity for workers, is often targeted by interest groups who try to divert the essence of the celebration towards other agendas that are not related to the workers’ struggle.

On previous occasions, Mayday has often been used as a means to voice demands outside the interests of workers. Not infrequently, there has been infiltration by certain groups that provoke the masses to act outside the limits of the law.

Head of the Paser Manpower and Transmigration Service (Disnakertrans), Rizky Noviar, said the main objective of the May Day commemoration this time was to strengthen relations between workers and improve their welfare.

“The government encourages that this May Day commemoration be more focused on social and community activities rather than demonstrations,” said Rizky.

In addition, many narratives are packaged in such a way as to stir collective emotions, exploiting the disappointment or dissatisfaction that exists among workers. This is where the importance of public intelligence in digesting every information and invitation that is circulating.

Interest groups seeking to take advantage of the Mayday situation usually have a structured work pattern. They spread propaganda in public discussion spaces, infiltrate labor organizations, and try to direct the masses to take actions that benefit their hidden agenda.

Parties involved in organizing Mayday activities, including trade unions, community organizations, and independent labor communities, need to commit to maintaining order and peace.

The Chairman of the All Indonesia Workers Union (SPSI) of South Aceh Regency, Muhammad Dini, emphasized the importance of collaboration between workers, employers, and the government to face global economic challenges ahead of International Labor Day.

“To workers, the community and students, let us commemorate May Day with positive, professional activities and be actively involved in maintaining the security and public order situation in South Aceh which has been very conducive so far.

Furthermore, the chairman of SPSI South Aceh also invited all workers and communities in South Aceh to increase collaboration with the TNI-Polri to maintain a safe and conducive situation and avoid provocative efforts by parties who want to damage the conducive atmosphere in South Aceh.

“Stay enthusiastic, collaborate with each other and together we will maintain a conducive, safe and comfortable South Aceh,” he concluded.
