Jakarta — The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) is hosting the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), taking place from May 12 to 15, 2025, at the DPR Building in Jakarta. This event also marks the 25th anniversary of the PUIC, which was established in 1999.

Speaker of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, stated that hosting this conference is not merely an administrative honor, but a crucial opportunity for Indonesia to demonstrate its diplomatic leadership within the Islamic world—one that promotes democracy, inclusivity, and concrete solutions.

“We are ready to warmly welcome all delegates and to ensure that this event becomes a platform for diplomacy beyond mere ceremony,” said Puan.

She emphasized that the conference aims to strengthen solidarity among OIC member states and to promote the role of parliaments in addressing global challenges. The PUIC seeks to enhance inter-parliamentary cooperation among OIC member countries in political, economic, social, and cultural sectors.

As the current President of the 19th PUIC, Indonesia has adopted the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” highlighting the importance of strong, transparent governance systems in reinforcing the resilience of the Islamic world.

Puan also expressed hope that key issues such as Palestinian independence and regional peace would remain central to the discussions.

“Parliamentary diplomacy requires real action in order to effectively respond to global challenges,” she affirmed.

Approximately 500 participants from OIC member countries, including several observer states, are expected to attend the conference. Puan noted that the participation of parliamentary leaders, including those from ASEAN nations such as Malaysia, reflects the successful organization of the PUIC in Indonesia.

She hopes that this event will foster stronger ties among OIC member states and promote more coordinated cooperation across various sectors.

Puan further noted that the spirit of global solidarity that emerged from the Asian-African Conference (AAC) seventy years ago serves as a foundational inspiration for this PUIC meeting.

Accordingly, she hopes that PUIC 2025 will be a platform to champion humanitarian values and contribute to building a more just and sovereign Islamic world.

Meanwhile, Iran has expressed great enthusiasm for the conference, sending a 62-member delegation, including the Speaker of its Parliament.
