Beware of Digital Payment Misuse by Online Gambling Agents

Jakarta – Indonesian people are urged to be increasingly vigilant against the misuse of digital payment systems utilized by online gambling agent networks. The government together with related institutions are now continuing to strengthen supervision in order to break the chain of illegal transactions that damage the nation’s social and economic order.

One of the concrete steps taken is to tighten regulations and reporting of payment systems. Deputy for Analysis and Examination of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), Danang Tri Hartono, revealed that now digital payment service provider platforms or payment gateways are required to report their transactions to PPATK.

“There is a significant change in payment gateway reporting. If previously it was not mandatory, now all platforms are required to report to PPATK,” explained Danang in the CNBC Indonesia Profit program, Tuesday (4/14/2025).

In addition, merchant aggregators or online merchant collectors are also in the main spotlight. According to Danang, the aggregator must ensure that all merchants who join have gone through a strict validation process. If any transactions related to online gambling activities are found, then the business relationship must be terminated immediately.

“If transactions related to that are found, their business relationship must be terminated. So that this financial system is clean from online gambling,” he said.

In line with that, Ovo President Director, Karaniya Dharmasaputra, emphasized the importance of the role of traders or merchants in combating online gambling practices. He explained that in addition to products and payment systems, digital traders are also often manipulated and misused by criminals.

“These traders or merchants who are now being misused on a large scale are used as hiding places by online gambling bookies,” said Karaniya.

Furthermore, Karaniya explained the mode that is often used is the misuse of transactions with QRIS by fake merchants. The perpetrators disguise their identities by opening fictitious businesses, such as food stalls or street vendors.

“It’s very strange if a meatball stall can be crowded at 1 a.m. and transactions reach billions. We continue to identify this with PPATK and Bank Indonesia. Patterns like this cannot be allowed,” he concluded.

With the rise of this kind of mode, the public is asked not to be careless about the phenomenon of online gambling that infiltrates through digital channels. Strengthening supervision and digital literacy are the main keys to maintaining a healthy digital economic ecosystem that is free from illegal activities.
