Beware of Hoax Provocation and Separatist Group Provocation

29

Jakarta – The government has appealed to the public to remain vigilant against the spread of hoaxes carried out by separatist groups in order to create instability and provoke the public. Hoax news spread through various social media platforms aims to divide national unity and influence public opinion.

The public in Papua must remain vigilant against propaganda and false information spread by the Free Papua Movement (OPM). Recently, OPM spread news related to the threat of genocide against Indigenous Papuans (OAP) which was claimed to be carried out by the TNI-Polri.

The government together with the security forces have increased efforts to handle this hoax by monitoring activities in cyberspace. In addition, collaboration with digital platforms is also carried out to reduce content that has the potential to provoke.

“That is hoax news because it is baseless propaganda and aims to provoke and cause fear in the community,” said Head of the Cartenz Peace Operation, Brigadier General Pol. Faizal Ramadhani.

According to Brigadier General Pol. Faizal, OPM is trying to create unrest and build a negative perception of the security forces. “It is certain that the news is not true and has no basis in fact, and the narrative conveyed is propaganda spread to incite and cause hatred towards the TNI-Polri,” he said.

Faizal emphasized that the TNI-Polri remain consistent in protecting all people, including Indigenous Papuans, from all forms of threats, including from criminal acts committed by the OPM.

“It is the duty of the TNI-Polri to protect all citizens without distinguishing between ethnicity, religion, or group. We will continue to carry out operations with a measured and humane legal approach to create security in the Land of Papua,” he added.

Brigadier General Pol. Faizal also appealed to the Papuan people not to easily believe information that cannot be verified and to remain calm. “We hope that the public will continue to coordinate with the authorities if they need security assistance,” he said.

He added that the OPM often uses sensitive issues to create conflict and tarnish the image of the security forces.

“The public is urged to remain vigilant against false information that aims to divert attention from criminal acts committed by the OPM,” concluded Brigadier General Pol. Faizal.

The spread of hoaxes by separatist groups often exploits sensitive issues such as religion, race, and social conflict to cause unrest in society. This unverified information quickly spreads through various digital platforms, including social media, instant messaging applications, and non-credible websites.

Therefore, it is hoped that collaboration between the government, security forces, and community elements is considered important to build shared awareness of the dangers of hoaxes that can divide national unity. Thus, the public can be wiser in using social media and not easily influenced by negative propaganda.
