Blocking DigitalOcean is the Right Move, Proof of Government’s Firm Stance Against Online Gambling

Jakarta – The government has affirmed that blocking the cloud storage service DigitalOceanSpaces.com is the right step in eradicating online gambling content. The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) discovered that this service was being misused to distribute gambling content across various subdomains.
“This temporary access termination was carried out after we verified reports from Kemkomdigi’s complaint system regarding the insertion of gambling content in subdomains of digitaloceanspaces.com,” said the Director General of Digital Space Oversight at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar.
For reference, DigitalOceanSpaces.com is a cloud storage service similar to OneDrive or Google Cloud. Unfortunately, this platform has often been misused to distribute illegal content. Kemkomdigi identified 123 subdomains on this site containing online gambling content.
The government has blocked all these subdomains to prevent further distribution. An attempt to restore access was initially scheduled for Monday (03/03) at 14:00 WIB but was later canceled. The reason was that later that evening, at 20:00 WIB, new subdomains containing gambling content were discovered.
“Kemkomdigi will further coordinate with the site provider to ensure that access to digitaloceanspaces.com can be normalized as soon as possible,” Alexander added.
This firm action was taken in accordance with Law No. 1 of 2024 and Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2020 on Electronic System Operation. The government remains committed to enforcing regulations and protecting the public from the negative impacts of online gambling.
Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, emphasized that the government has prepared an integrated strategy to tackle online gambling.
“Online gambling not only harms the national economy but also has broad social impacts. Therefore, we are strengthening the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force with a technology-based approach and cross-sector cooperation to make this effort more effective,” she explained.
In a meeting with the President’s Special Advisor for Politics and Security, Wiranto, Meutya outlined the government’s strategy to combat online gambling.
One of the key measures includes the establishment of the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force and the Cyber Security Task Force, both of which are part of President Prabowo Subianto’s priority programs in the political and security sectors.
