The blocking of DigitalOcean by the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is the right step and must be supported. This decision was made after the discovery of hundreds of subdomains used to distribute online gambling content, proving that this platform is vulnerable to misuse.

DigitalOceanSpaces.com is a cloud-based storage service that allows users to store and manage various types of data online. However, this flexibility has been exploited by irresponsible parties to spread illegal content, including online gambling. Kemkomdigi’s findings revealed that 123 subdomains on this site contained gambling content, necessitating firm action.

This blocking is not without legal grounds. Kemkomdigi took this step in accordance with Law No. 1 of 2024 and Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2020 on Electronic System Operation. With clear regulations in place, taking firm action against platforms that allow online gambling content to thrive is a necessary measure to protect the public from its negative impacts.

This firm action deserves appreciation as a serious effort by the government to cut off access to online gambling practices. Online gambling has become a severe problem that corrupts young generations, destroys family economies, and even triggers criminal activities. The decision to block DigitalOcean shows that the government is not standing idly by in the face of this threat.

The government’s courage in taking action against platforms used for online gambling should be appreciated. This is not just about a single site but also a message to all digital service providers that they must be more responsible in ensuring their services are not misused for illegal activities. As a global technology company, DigitalOcean should have stricter monitoring and security systems to prevent its platform from being used for cybercrime.

Moreover, this blocking has a positive impact in limiting access to the rampant spread of online gambling. By cutting off access to platforms used to distribute gambling content, the government also protects society from the dangers of gambling addiction, which can lead to financial and social problems. Many online gambling victims fall into massive debt and lose their possessions due to a game that ultimately always disadvantages its players.

Kemkomdigi had previously considered normalizing access to DigitalOceanSpaces.com on March 3, 2025. However, this decision was revoked after new subdomains containing gambling content were found again. This further proves that the platform still lacks adequate security measures to prevent the misuse of its services. Therefore, the blocking policy remains in place to maintain digital order and protect the public from its harmful effects.

This government action aligns with the national strategy to eradicate online gambling. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that the government is not only relying on blocking measures but also developing technology-based strategies and cross-sector collaboration to close opportunities for online gambling operators. With cross-sector collaboration, online gambling monitoring can be further tightened.

This decision marks an important momentum to affirm that Indonesia does not tolerate online gambling practices. The country must remain firm in taking action against any form of digital space abuse that could harm the morality and economy of its people. The success of blocking DigitalOcean is also expected to serve as an example for other digital platforms to be more cautious and proactive in monitoring their content.

The public also plays a crucial role in eradicating online gambling. One step that can be taken is to be more selective when accessing websites and digital applications. If any indications of online gambling are found on a platform, they should be reported to the authorities for immediate action. Additionally, it is essential to educate the community, especially the younger generation, about the dangers of online gambling and how to avoid it.

Parents must also be more active in monitoring their children’s digital activities, as online gambling often targets young people through various enticing advertisements. By increasing digital literacy and awareness of the dangers of online gambling, society can contribute to creating a healthier and safer internet environment.

At this moment, during Ramadan, the public should take this opportunity to strengthen their faith and devotion. Avoiding online gambling is part of maintaining moral and spiritual integrity, preventing individuals from falling into practices that harm both themselves and others. During this holy month, people should focus more on worship and positive activities that support a better life.

The public must also be more vigilant against the ever-evolving threats of online gambling, which come in various forms. Do not be easily tempted by the promise of instant profits that ultimately only lead to losses. Support the government’s efforts in eradicating online gambling for a better future for the next generation. Active participation from all parties, including the public, internet service providers, and law enforcement agencies, is crucial to ensuring a safer and cleaner digital ecosystem, free from online gambling.
