Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s consistency and tenacity in fighting for independence and the rights of the Palestinian people has received international appreciation.

One of these things was marked by the awarding of the highest award from the Palestinian Government, the “Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine,” to President Joko Widodo.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi explained that this award was a tribute from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for Indonesia’s firm position.

“The Special Envoy expressed President Mahmoud Abbas’s very high appreciation to President Jokowi for Indonesia’s consistency in supporting the Palestinian struggle,” said Foreign Minister Retno.

Foreign Minister Retno added that President Abbas appreciated Indonesia’s important role in supporting the Palestinian people, including advocating for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, Lazzarini, a representative of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), praised Indonesia’s contribution, including increasing funding to reach USD 1.2 million by 2024.

“More than 250 UNRWA humanitarian workers have been killed, and two-thirds of UNRWA buildings destroyed in Gaza. “Indonesia’s support is very meaningful,” he said.

As is known, since the beginning of his reign, President Jokowi has met with a number of important figures such as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to convey Indonesia’s firm stance in defending Palestinian independence.

Not only that, President Jokowi was also active in voicing Palestinian independence at the 5th Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OKI LB Summit) in 2016. In 2018, President Jokowi took a firm decision to waive import duties on imports of goods from Palestine.

Meanwhile, on November 14 2023, President Joko Widodo met with United States President Joe Biden. During the meeting, President Jokowi invited Joe Biden to defend the humanitarian rights and justice of the Palestinian people.

“I really hope that the US can show its leadership and be at the forefront of defending justice and humanity for the Palestinian people, for peace and Palestinian independence based on a two-state solution,” said President Jokowi.

Furthermore, on April 3 2024, President Jokowi also ordered humanitarian assistance from the Indonesian people to the Palestinian people, as a concrete manifestation of Indonesia’s involvement in humanitarian missions.
