Diplomacy Becomes Government’s Strategic Step in Facing Trump Tariffs

Jakarta — The Indonesian government continues to strengthen its economic diplomacy strategy in the face of tariff policies imposed by the United States. This step was taken to ensure national interests are maintained amidst global dynamics full of challenges.
Through intensive bilateral dialogue and a constructive multilateral approach, Indonesia seeks the best solution to maintain national export stability. The government also encourages export market diversification and accelerates the strengthening of domestic industries to be more adaptive to changes in global trade policies.
Responding to this condition, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati emphasized that the government has begun the initial stage of bilateral negotiations with the US. This step is strengthened through the simplification of national regulations, not only for the sake of foreign interests, but also to improve the domestic business and investment climate. “Deregulation is carried out to strengthen the efficiency and competitiveness of the national industry,” she said.
Inter-ministerial coordination is also encouraged, including the formation of a technical working group to discuss the trade and investment sector. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that Indonesia has signed a confidentiality agreement (NDA) with the US Trade Representative Office, indicating the seriousness of the two countries in seeking a joint solution.
Perbanas Institute Economics Lecturer, Dr. Aviliani, emphasized that a diplomatic approach needs to be prioritized to protect the most vulnerable labor-intensive sectors.
“Diplomacy is a smart move, alongside expanding export markets and strengthening domestic industry,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Center for International Trade Policy of the Ministry of Trade Olvy Andrianita from said that accelerating the completion of international trade agreements is the key to maintaining the competitiveness of Indonesian products.
This government step has received appreciation from the legislative circles. Member of Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives Marwan Cik Asan called the diplomatic approach and incentives to the industry a smart move. The same thing was conveyed by Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Adies Kadir who supports efforts to mitigate market risks and strengthen multilateral trade cooperation.
With these strategic steps, Indonesia has demonstrated maturity in facing global challenges. A constructive and balanced diplomatic approach is key to maintaining national economic stability and strengthening Indonesia’s position as a credible and competitive trading partner in the eyes of the world.
