Firm Action: Government Accelerates Blocking of Online Gambling Sites

Jakarta – The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi), has taken firm action by blocking the site digitaloceanspaces.com after online gambling content was found on several subdomains. This decision is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy and illegal-free digital space.
The Director General of Digital Space Oversight at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, explained that the access cutoff was made after a report was received from the ministry’s complaint system regarding the presence of gambling content within the subdomains of the site.
“This temporary access cutoff was carried out after we verified the report from Kemkomdigi’s complaint system about gambling content being inserted in the subdomains of digitaloceanspaces.com,” said Alexander.
The investigation by Kemkomdigi’s digital space control team found a total of 123 subdomains within digitaloceanspaces.com containing online gambling content. All of these subdomains have been successfully blocked to prevent further spread, which could harm the public. This step is in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 1 of 2024 and Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2020 on Electronic System Implementation.
“Kemkomdigi is committed to enforcing regulations and protecting the public from the negative impacts of online gambling. Therefore, this firm action is necessary to ensure there are no loopholes for the spread of illegal content,” emphasized Alexander.
“We will continue to coordinate with the site operators to ensure that access to digitaloceanspaces.com can be normalized as soon as all illegal content is removed,” he added.
Cybersecurity expert Rudi Hartanto believes that the actions taken by Kemkomdigi are correct and should be reinforced with cross-sector collaboration.
“The government needs to partner with internet service providers and digital platforms to be more proactive in preventing the spread of illegal content. Additionally, digital literacy should be improved so that the public doesn’t fall victim to online gambling activities,” Rudi explained.
Kemkomdigi continues to urge the public not to engage in online gambling activities and to report any signs of illegal content in the digital space. This blocking action is expected to have a deterrent effect and reduce the circulation of online gambling sites that harm the public and the country.
Moreover, Kemkomdigi will increase oversight of other digital platforms to ensure there are no loopholes for such illegal practices in the future.
