Government Accelerates Utilization of Solar Energy for Energy Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the government is currently accelerating the massive utilization of solar energy as part of the national energy transition strategy towards energy self-sufficiency through the 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
“Indonesia has large, widespread, and diverse renewable energy potential. Therefore, we ensure that renewable energy development is carried out according to local potential and needs in each region. From Sumatra to Papua, we encourage all regions to grow with clean energy,” said Bahlil in Jakarta.
The development of PLTS will be focused on areas with high solar radiation intensity such as Java, Madura, and Bali (Jamali), as well as the eastern region of Indonesia, namely Papua, Maluku, and Nusa Tenggara. In the Jamali region itself, the renewable energy development capacity reaches 19.6 GW, with PLTS being the largest portion at 10.9 GW.
The government also pays special attention to the 3T (frontier, outermost, lagging) regions such as Papua, Maluku, and Nusa Tenggara even though their national contribution is smaller, namely around 2.3 GW. He emphasized that this planning is much more concrete and accountable because it has included the location of the development point to the implementation timeline.
“Now the location and development schedule are clear. Unlike before, which was still general. Which district, what year it started construction, everything is clear,” said Bahlil.
In addition to PLTS, the development of EBT power plants also includes 11.7 GW of hydroelectric power plants, 7.2 GW of wind energy, 5.2 GW of geothermal energy, 0.9 GW of bioenergy, and 0.5 GW of nuclear power. All of these power plants will be strengthened with an energy storage system of 10.3 GW, consisting of pumped storage hydroelectric power plants (6 GW) and battery energy storage systems or BESS (4.3 GW).
PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that PLN is ready to implement all targets and strategies that have been formulated in the RUPTL, including accelerating the development of PLTS as the spearhead of the energy transition.
“PLN is ready to implement all plans in this RUPTL as a real step in Indonesia’s energy transition towards Net Zero Emissions in order to strengthen national electricity reliability while encouraging the use of local energy to realize energy self-sufficiency,” said Darmawan.
Furthermore, Darmawan emphasized that the successful implementation of the RUPTL will greatly determine Indonesia’s ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a sustainable electricity ecosystem.
This step confirms Indonesia’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2060 or sooner. The government also continues to encourage the participation of the private sector, BUMN, and the community in accelerating the solar-based energy transition.
“The government cannot act alone. Cross-sector collaboration is needed so that we can truly realize national energy independence,” concluded Bahlil.
