Government Consistently Shuts Down Thousands of Online Gambling Sites Every Week
Jakarta – The government continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to protecting the public from the dangers of online gambling, which is increasingly prevalent in the digital space.
Online gambling itself is the activity of betting money or valuables over the internet.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is at the forefront of efforts to eradicate this illegal practice.
Through cross-agency collaboration, the government continues to take decisive action by blocking thousands of sites and accounts linked to online gambling transactions.
Together with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Kemkomdigi has closed 23,929 accounts suspected of being involved in online gambling activities.
Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that this step reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of the national digital space.
“We are working to ensure that the flow of funds from illegal activities such as online gambling is completely stopped,” said Meutya.
She added that the blocking is carried out through routine cyber patrols and public reports received through the official Kemkomdigi complaint channel.
According to Meutya, this action demonstrates the synergy between the government and the public in creating a safe digital environment.
Meanwhile, Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, acknowledged that gambling content remains a major challenge in enforcing digital regulations.
“Therefore, Komdigi continues to conduct intensive monitoring and encourages the public to work together to combat online gambling,” he said.
Alexander explained that eradication efforts focus not only on removing content but also on strengthening cross-sector collaboration with digital platforms, law enforcement officials, and relevant institutions.
“Handling this negative content is not only the government’s responsibility, but also requires collective awareness from the public,” he added.
As a form of innovation, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy is also collaborating with academics. Five students from the University of Lampung have successfully developed the Gambling Activity Tracing Engine (GATE System), a linguistic, visual, and financial transaction-based system for detecting online gambling activity.
“The GATE System is a clear demonstration of the young generation’s concern for the nation’s problems. From October 2024 to September 2025, we successfully handled more than 2.17 million pieces of gambling content,” explained Alexander.
One of the system’s developers, Zaka Kurnia Rahman, said,
“We hypothesized that online gambling could be financially disrupted. Therefore, we developed this secure method to track deposit transactions.”
With these decisive and collaborative measures, the government demonstrates its consistency in shutting down thousands of online gambling sites every week to maintain a clean and safe digital space for all citizens.
