Government Opens Thousands of Food Outlets to Maintain Price Stability

JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is taking firm steps to stabilize staple food prices by opening 4,800 food outlets nationwide. This initiative is a concrete effort to support the public in facing price fluctuations, especially ahead of the holy month of Ramadan and Eid.

Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that these outlets will sell food at prices below the Maximum Retail Price (HET) to curb price surges.

“We will sell food below HET. No business is allowed to sell above HET. If they do, they will face sanctions,” said Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.

The outlets will be managed by several State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) and related ministries, including RNI, Bulog, PPI, PT Pos, and Berdikari. This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to ensure food price stability for the welfare of the people.

The minister highlighted price fluctuations in key commodities, particularly chili and rice. He explained that chili prices had reached Rp200,000 per kilogram before dropping to Rp100,000 per kilogram following improvements in the distribution system.

“This price increase was due to weather factors and distribution challenges. Therefore, we must pay closer attention to the distribution system,” he explained.

Regarding rice prices, Andi Amran Sulaiman asserted that there is no reason for price hikes since national production has increased by 52 percent, ensuring abundant stock.

The same applies to cooking oil, as Indonesia, the world’s largest producer, continues to ensure stable prices through various government policies.

The government will conduct surprise inspections (sidak) until Eid. If violations are found, strict sanctions will be imposed to protect consumers.

Meanwhile, the Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, added that affordable food is now available in modern markets to maintain price stability during Ramadan 1446 H.

The government is collaborating with the Indonesian Retail Entrepreneurs Association (Aprindo) to organize a low-cost market initiative called Friday Mubarak to boost public consumption during the holy month.

“We consistently provide essential food items at good prices for the public, including working with Aprindo to reach modern markets. This way, people have more shopping options,” said Arief Prasetyo Adi.

Superindo, as part of Aprindo, is participating in the program by offering at least 1,200 basic food packages at discounts of up to 30 percent.

Superindo’s National Head of Retail Operations, Joko Susanto, stated that the program has been implemented in 10 cities.

“As an Aprindo member, Superindo supports this program to help people access essential goods at more affordable prices,” said Joko Susanto.

This initiative reflects the strong commitment of the government and businesses to maintaining food price stability for the well-being of the people, especially during significant moments like Ramadan and Eid.
