Government Prioritizes Sustainability in Raja Ampat: Investment Continues, Environment Preserved
WEST PAPUA – The government has demonstrated a strong commitment to maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation, particularly in strategic areas like Raja Ampat. The temporary suspension of mining activities by PT Gag Nikel signals that all investments must adhere to principles of sustainability and ecological protection.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, emphasized that the government will not take risks in managing natural resources in sensitive areas. “Even though the mine is located far from the main tourist zones, we still carry out on-site verification to ensure there are no loopholes for environmental damage,” said Bahlil Lahadalia.
The verification and evaluation of mining business permits are being conducted thoroughly. This step is not a rejection of investment but rather an effort to create a healthy and responsible investment climate. The government is aligning the contribution of the mining sector to the national economy with biodiversity conservation in a balanced manner.
Head of the Environmental and Forestry Licensing Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, stressed that the government’s approach is both preventive and solution-oriented. “We are prepared to revoke business licenses if any environmental violations are found,” asserted Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
This action reflects a serious commitment to improving licensing governance and preventing long-term impacts in areas with limited ecological carrying capacity, such as Gag Island. By considering local characteristics, permit evaluations represent a policy adaptation tailored to the needs of the region.
Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, also highlighted the importance of preserving the cultural heritage and natural beauty of Raja Ampat from potential industrial harm.
“The government is committed to ensuring that historical sites and natural landscapes remain protected amid any investment activities,” added Fadli Zon.
Cross-ministerial coordination and participatory approaches further strengthen the legitimacy of the policies being implemented. The government ensures that this decision is not merely a reaction to public pressure, but a part of a broader national development direction rooted in environmental ethics.
Through this initiative, the government not only safeguards ecological heritage but also lays a strong foundation for more ethical and sustainable long-term investment. Raja Ampat remains a symbol of harmony between nature and development.
