Jakarta – The Indonesian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the green economy transition and carbon emission reduction at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Indonesian delegation, led by the President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, attended the strategic meeting to strengthen global cooperation in addressing the climate crisis.

Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, emphasized that Indonesia continues to take real steps to achieve the 2015 Paris Agreement targets. “Indonesia’s participation in COP29 confirms our determination to focus on mutually beneficial partnerships, not just relying on international assistance,” said Hanif.

Hanif highlighted the importance of carbon trading as the main instrument in supporting greenhouse gas emission reductions. Indonesia has adopted the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) mechanism with Japan as part of the implementation of Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

“The carbon market must support emission reduction targets, not just economic interests,” he emphasized.

In addition, Indonesia is accelerating the use of renewable energy by developing the Indonesian Emission Reduction Certificate (SPEI) as a carbon emission certification standard. The government is targeting the carbon trade roadmap to be completed in the next three months.

In the COP29 plenary session, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, emphasized that the government of President Prabowo Subianto will continue all previously established climate action commitments.

“President Prabowo is committed to increasing climate action and continuing existing policies,” said Hashim.

Prabowo is targeting economic growth of 8% while still prioritizing environmentally friendly development. “We are targeting net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner and avoiding carbon emissions of up to 1 billion tons,” he added.

In the financial sector, Darmawan Junaidi, President Director of Bank Mandiri, stated that banking plays an important role in supporting the climate change agenda. “Bank Mandiri is committed to leading in sustainable financing innovation, utilizing the strength of Indonesia’s natural resources as a strategic asset in maintaining climate stability,” he said.

Indonesia will also increase the capacity of renewable energy-based power plants, build an environmentally friendly smart grid, and revitalize 12 million hectares of damaged forests. With these steps, the government is optimistic that it can balance economic growth and environmental sustainability.
