Government Targets 165 People’s Schools to Be Operational by October 2025
Jakarta – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to education for all through the People’s School program. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that by October 2025, 165 People’s Schools are targeted to be operational to serve the nation’s children, especially those from low-income families.
“I received a report at the end of September, and in two or three weeks, there will be 165 people’s schools. And God willing, I will be asked to inaugurate them in October,” said President Prabowo while visiting the Margaguna People’s School.
Prabowo emphasized that this program is not only aimed at low-income communities in decile 1, but is also accessible to communities in deciles 2 through 5. According to him, People’s Schools serve as an inclusive educational space, providing opportunities for children who have dropped out of school to continue their education with adequate facilities.
“Thank God, we are taking out children who dropped out of school and who may have felt inferior because their parents’ lives were so difficult. This will help them become more confident and receive the best education,” the President emphasized.
In addition to increasing the number of new schools, the government is also working to improve the quality of facilities and infrastructure. Prabowo revealed that one of the innovations implemented is the use of smart digital screen technology, which enables effective distance learning.
“Each subject will be broadcast from a remote studio. Teachers can assist all classes throughout Indonesia. So that’s the technology we’re using,” he explained.
In line with the President’s directive, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), emphasized that Public Schools are not just about physical development, but also improving the quality of education. During a visit to Public High School (SMA) 6 in Bengkulu City, AHY emphasized the importance of providing quality educational opportunities for children from underprivileged families.
“How can we provide opportunities for all children of the nation, especially those from underprivileged families? People’s Schools are one solution to ensure our children have an education,” said AHY.
The government is optimistic that with the addition of schools each year and improvements in the quality of teaching staff, People’s Schools will be a crucial instrument in breaking the cycle of poverty and preparing a more resilient future generation for Indonesia.
