Human Rights and Women’s Protection Among Key Issues at PUIC Conference in Jakarta

Jakarta — The 19th session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), held in Jakarta from May 12 to 15, 2025, is addressing not only economic cooperation but also placing significant focus on human rights issues, including the protection of women and children in both conflict and peacetime situations.
Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) from the Gerindra Party, Muhammad Husein Fadlulloh, emphasized the importance of addressing gender equality in the forum.
“Women and children’s issues are at the forefront, whether in times of war or peace. In our own parliament, we have achieved 22 percent female representation, which is approaching the global target of 30 percent,” he stated.
He added that the political electability of women remains a challenge in many countries.
Therefore, he stressed, the PUIC forum must push for concrete solutions to increase women’s participation at all levels of decision-making.
Eva Yuliana Monica, a member of BKSAP from the Indonesian House of Representatives, also highlighted—via the DPR RI’s YouTube channel—the urgent need to address the issue of Palestinian independence during the session.
“Indonesia’s parliament will continue urging OIC countries to unite in the effort to liberate Palestine from decades of oppression,” said Eva.
She underscored the importance of supporting Palestinian independence negotiations and enhancing international engagement on the issue.
“We will also raise the plight of Palestinian detainees, some of whom have been imprisoned for decades and subjected to severe torture, including resulting in blindness,” she revealed.
Eva stressed that the Palestinian people reject evacuation, choosing instead to preserve their ethnic identity.
“They do not want to lose their roots in their homeland. We also welcome the solidarity expressed by various delegates who wish to join in this struggle,” she added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of BKSAP DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, reiterated that Indonesia will bring forward the issues of women and youth participation at the PUIC session, alongside its core focus on the Palestinian struggle for independence.
“We will promote the agenda of women and youth participation as an integral part of PUIC’s broader mission, along with our continued solidarity with Palestine,” he stated.
