Indonesia has once again proven itself to be a key actor on the global diplomatic stage by successfully hosting the 19th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), which officially concluded on Thursday, May 15. This success is not only a logistical and protocol achievement but also a reflection of Indonesia’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace and global stability—especially amid a rising tide of global uncertainty.

The PUIC forum, held from May 12–15, 2025, demonstrated that the path to resolving global challenges such as conflict, inequality, and humanitarian crises lies in good governance, institutional strengthening, and inclusive multilateral cooperation.

Carrying the theme Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” the conference emphasized the urgent need for transparent, accountable, and citizen-oriented governance structures. Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, stated that the theme was highly relevant to today’s global challenges. Member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must build internal resilience through effective governance and robust institutions. In this regard, Indonesia serves as a tangible example of how institutional reform can reinforce national resilience and contribute to global stability.

Puan also highlighted the importance of enhancing solidarity among Muslim nations, promoting peace, advancing economic cooperation, empowering women, and combating Islamophobia and intolerance. These issues lie at the root of many instabilities, and if left unaddressed, they will continue to provoke conflict. By actively participating and hosting the PUIC forum, Indonesia has demonstrated a commitment not only to voicing concerns but also to driving concrete solutions.

In his keynote speech, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that global challenges extend beyond the Palestinian issue, encompassing structural problems such as poverty, hunger, corruption, and inequality in education. He affirmed that these problems can only be resolved if each country is willing to improve itself through honest leadership, good governance, and strong institutions. As part of this vision, the Indonesian government is currently undertaking major national reforms, including political and bureaucratic transformation, human capital development, food and energy self-sufficiency, and mastery of science and technology.

President Prabowo’s message was clear: world peace cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone—it must begin with action at the national level. Indonesia is leading by example, not only in domestic development but also in its contributions to the international stage. The PUIC forum served as an ideal platform to deliver this message to the world: that global stability is impossible if state institutions are weak and democratic values are ignored.

Bramantyo Suwondo, Vice Chair of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (BKSAP), echoed this sentiment, stating that the PUIC conference was a strategic moment for Indonesia to showcase its genuine commitment to advancing communication, cooperation, and mutual understanding among nations. He underlined that the world is facing economic and political instability, and in the midst of this global crisis, Indonesia has chosen not to remain silent, but to actively advocate for solidarity and equality among nations—both large and small.

Furthermore, Bramantyo affirmed that the Indonesian parliament will continue to uphold its constitutional responsibility to safeguard global peace and ensure that human rights, economic justice, and political participation are not sidelined in the formulation of international policies. This reinforces the view that parliaments play not only a domestic role but also an essential function in guiding a nation’s diplomacy at the global level. Through parliamentary diplomacy, Indonesia promotes peaceful solutions to ongoing conflicts and tensions within the Muslim world and beyond.

The successful hosting of the PUIC session in Jakarta is a testament not only to Indonesia’s readiness as a host nation but also to its sincerity and determination to serve as a bridge for dialogue among nations. The forum has become a key platform for strengthening solidarity among OIC members and building strategic consensus to navigate future challenges. Over the past 25 years, PUIC has emerged as an important venue for legislative cooperation among Muslim nations. Yet as Puan Maharani noted, the organization’s real impact depends not merely on its declarations of unity, but on the concrete decisions and collective actions that follow.

Indonesia’s success in this forum is a compelling reminder that a country’s strength is not measured by its size or population, but by the extent of its leadership in promoting a more peaceful and just world. Indonesia has not only acted as a facilitator but also as a driver of change, helping steer global diplomacy toward shared solutions. This further affirms Indonesia’s role as a nation not only pursuing its own progress but also striving to grow together with others, in the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect.

Indonesia’s concrete leadership at PUIC 2025 was not just a national achievement—it was a contribution to a more sustainable and dignified global order.
