Indonesia Undaunted by Trump’s Tariff Policy
Jakarta – The Indonesian government has responded firmly to the United States’ policy of imposing a 32 percent import tariff on a number of national export products. President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto emphasized that Indonesia will not submit to unilateral pressure from any country.
“Indonesia is an independent country that cannot be pressured by unilateral policies from any country,” Prabowo said in Jakarta.
According to him, Indonesia has the principle of maintaining dignity and economic sovereignty, as well as fighting for a fair, equal, and mutually beneficial trade system.
The government has chosen a diplomatic step by prioritizing dialogue. A high-level delegation has been sent to Washington to discuss the best way out.
“We are open to discussion, but we will continue to uphold the principle of protecting national interests and not sacrificing strategic sectors,” Prabowo emphasized.
He considered that negotiations must be carried out from a position of strength, not in a position of being pressured by unilateral decisions.
The President also emphasized the importance of strengthening national economic resilience.
“I invite all elements of society to unite to support the affected sectors, such as labor-intensive industries and MSMEs,” he said.
This, according to Prabowo, is a momentum for Indonesia to strengthen domestic competitiveness and expand export markets to non-traditional countries.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati added that the government is currently drafting five strategic agreements with the US to mitigate the impact of tariff policies.
“We have met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and conveyed Indonesia’s readiness to negotiate for a fairer solution,” said Sri Mulyani.
She emphasized that Indonesia does not reject cooperation, but will continue to maintain its economic sovereignty. Sri Mulyani also reported the results of her visit to President Prabowo.
“The President welcomes these steps and fully supports the efforts of the national economic team,” she said.
According to Sri Mulyani, synergy between diplomacy and strengthening the domestic economy is the key to facing global challenges.
The Indonesian government emphasized that the steps taken are responsive, measurable, and collaborative. Indonesia is not only focused on short-term solutions, but also preparing long-term policies that will strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global market.
The government is committed to maintaining domestic economic stability, protecting national business actors, and ensuring that Indonesia continues to stand tall as a respected country on the international stage.-
