Indonesian Military Joint Forces Take Down OPM Leader in Puncak Jaya

Puncak Jaya – Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) joint forces have once again demonstrated their effectiveness in maintaining security stability in Central Papua. In a measured and professional military operation conducted in Ilamburawi District, Puncak Jaya Regency, a key figure of the Free Papua Organization (OPM), Nekison Enumbi, also known as Bumi Walo Enumbi, was successfully neutralized. The operation was carried out on Saturday (May 10, 2025) by the TNI Joint Task Force.
Nekison was known as one of the armed OPM leaders operating in the Yambi area and had long been wanted for his involvement in various acts of violence and armed terror in Central Papua. He was listed as a fugitive (DPO) by the Puncak Jaya Police under the number DPO/S-34/01/IV/2024/RESKRIM dated April 25, 2024. Among his most notorious actions were the assault on Puncak Jaya police personnel on January 21, 2025, and the shooting of a retired police officer on April 7, 2025. These attacks added to the long list of violent acts committed by separatist armed groups targeting security forces and civilians alike.
“This success is a concrete manifestation of the TNI’s commitment to maintaining security stability and protecting the people of Papua from armed terror threats. The operation was executed with precision, based on accurate intelligence from other task force units,” said Lieutenant Colonel Iwan Dwi Prihartono, Commander of the Media Task Force for TNI Joint Operations Command Habema.
During the ensuing gunfight, Nekison fiercely resisted but was ultimately subdued on the spot. From the scene, TNI troops secured several pieces of evidence strongly believed to have been used in various violent acts. These included three rounds of 9 mm ammunition, one 5.56 mm shell casing, two axes, six machetes, and two radio communication devices (HTs). Also confiscated were three pistol holsters, two GSM mobile phones, one Android smartphone, four bows, and 90 arrows.
This success not only marks a tactical security gain but also sends a strong moral message: the state will not remain silent in the face of any threats to national sovereignty and public peace.
Residents in the Puncak Jaya region have been urged to remain calm and continue supporting the law enforcement efforts carried out by authorities. The decisive action taken against figures like Nekison Enumbi serves as clear proof that the government is present and will not tolerate violence that disrupts public order.
With this operation’s success, the TNI Joint Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to securing Papua and ensuring that the local population can live safely, peacefully, and with dignity.
