Islamic Parliamentary Solidarity Strengthened as 2025 PUIC Conference Produces Jakarta Declaration

Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), held at the House of Representatives (DPR RI) building in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, from May 12 to 15, 2025, is set to produce a key document titled the Jakarta Declaration.
Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mardani Ali Sera, stated that the declaration will be the primary outcome of this international conference. He added that some delegates also suggested an alternative name for the declaration.
“The outcome of this PUIC is what we’re calling the Jakarta Declaration. However, some have proposed calling it the Senayan Declaration, since the event is being held in Senayan,” said Mardani.
The forthcoming declaration is expected to reflect the spirit of cooperation among parliaments of OIC member states in promoting good governance and strengthening institutions as pillars of national resilience. This aligns with the conference’s main theme: “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.”
The 19th PUIC Conference holds special significance as it also marks the 25th anniversary—or silver jubilee—of the organization, which was established in 1999. The event is attended by approximately 450 delegates from 38 OIC member states and 10 observer countries.
The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, is scheduled to attend the official opening of the PUIC Conference on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Parliament Complex in Senayan. President Prabowo’s presence reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and solidarity among Islamic nations.
Mardani also highlighted the reasoning behind holding the conference at the DPR RI building, noting it as part of the government’s efficiency efforts.
“Why was the event held in Senayan? Of course, it supports President Prabowo’s efficiency program. We have our own venue, and we can make good use of it,” he explained.
He mentioned that many delegates expressed admiration for the facilities and atmosphere of the DPR RI building, which they found strategically located and environmentally friendly.
“Most of the comments from delegates were expressions of admiration. The complex is large, green, in the heart of the city, and the meeting facilities are excellent,” he added.
With several key agendas scheduled over the four-day event, the 2025 PUIC Conference in Jakarta is expected to enhance inter-parliamentary collaboration in addressing strategic global issues, particularly those concerning the Islamic world.
The Jakarta Declaration, to be announced at the closing of the conference, is expected to serve as a shared framework for strengthening inclusive governance, increasing the role of parliaments in maintaining global stability, and fostering greater solidarity among OIC member states in facing contemporary challenges.
The conference also reaffirms Indonesia’s status as a capable host of high-standard international events and its strategic role in advancing inter-parliamentary diplomacy within the Islamic world.
