Joint Operation in Yahukimo is Real Evidence of Security Forces Maintaining Security in PapuaBy: Melianus Yikwa )*
Security is the main foundation for development and prosperity in every region. In Papua, the challenge of maintaining stability has become more complex due to the presence of armed groups that continue to disrupt the security of civilians and hinder the development process. In this context, the firm and professional steps of the security forces, especially the TNI and the Intelligence Task Force, should be appreciated as a real form of the state’s commitment to protecting all citizens without exception.
The operation to take action against two members of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) led by Egianus Kogoya in Yahukimo on June 16, 2025 is proof of the success of the authorities in responding to concrete threats. Armed with accurate and verified intelligence information, the TNI Joint Task Force managed to paralyze the two perpetrators without causing casualties on the part of the authorities or the surrounding community. This success shows that a professionalism and precision-based approach has become the standard in carrying out operations in conflict areas.
The presence of the authorities is a real symbol that the state is present for all its citizens, including in areas that have so far faced high security challenges. These actions not only harm the community’s sense of security, but also create long-term trauma for local communities. In conditions like this, the presence of security forces is the hope and main protector for civilians who want to live in peace and build their future properly.
The TNI’s steps in the operation in Yahukimo show synergy between military strength, intelligence approaches, and cooperation with the local community. Information support from local residents reflects the increasing public trust in state institutions. This is important to continue to be maintained and strengthened, because stability in Papua can not only be achieved through an armed approach, but also by building strong relations between the apparatus and residents.
Major General TNI Kristomei Sianturi, Head of the TNI Information Center, clearly stated that this operation was an effort to provide a sense of security and support the acceleration of welfare development in Papua. This assertion needs to be understood as part of a comprehensive strategy that includes aspects of security, law, and socio-economic development. A comprehensive approach like this is important for building a peaceful and prosperous Papua.
Action against OPM members was also carried out with the principle of proportionality and prioritizing legal principles. There were no excesses that harmed the community, and the evidence that was secured became part of the effort to strengthen the evidence against perpetrators of law violations. This distinguishes the current security approach from the past approach which was often criticized for being excessive. Now, the authorities have shown that they are able to work professionally and according to the rules.
In addition to a firm approach to perpetrators of violence, the TNI has also emphasized its commitment to opening up space for dialogue and reconciliation. This shows that the security forces are not merely acting repressively, but are also ready to be partners in building inclusive peace. Continuous territorial development efforts are an important part of this strategy, because a humanitarian approach is often more effective in ending prolonged conflict.
The success of the Yahukimo operation also serves as a warning to armed groups that acts of violence will not bring any change. In fact, violence will only invite legal responses and increasingly measured and systematic security operations. On the other hand, for those who are willing to return to the path of peace, the state opens the door wide to join in the process of just and dignified development.
Egianus Kogoya, as one of the OPM leaders who is still active, is now in an increasingly desperate position. With consistent law enforcement and an approach that prioritizes community protection, the separatist group’s room to move is increasingly limited. The community is now more courageous in rejecting involvement in illegal activities and has more confidence in the protection provided by the state.
From a national perspective, the actions of the authorities in Yahukimo reflect the state’s seriousness in maintaining sovereignty throughout the region, without neglecting civil rights. Papua is a legitimate part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, and it is the responsibility of all elements of the nation to ensure that development and peace can be felt even in the remote mountains.
It is important to realize that the security forces are at the forefront in ensuring that Papua remains peaceful and free from armed terror. Support for the TNI and other security institutions is not only a form of solidarity, but also recognition of the heavy duties they carry out for the sake of the integrity of the nation.gasan in operations, caution in implementation, and sensitivity to local dynamics are important pillars in maintaining public trust.
In the future, efforts like this need to continue to be strengthened with cross-sector support, both through affirmative policies, provision of access to education and health, and development of infrastructure that reaches remote communities. With a combination of security and development, Papua will become a strong, independent, and peaceful part of Indonesia. Therefore, it is only right that the entire community appreciates the professionalism and dedication of the officers on duty at the forefront in order to realize a shared ideal: a safe and prosperous Papua within the framework of Indonesia.
