Maneuvers to Reject Revision of TNI Law and Polri Bill Threaten National Stability

Jakarta – Demonstrations against the revision of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Law (UU TNI) and the RUU Polri continue to draw criticism. Several elements of society consider that the demonstrations can disrupt national stability and potentially increase tensions in society.

These actions, which have occurred in various regions, risk creating discomfort for many parties.

Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dave Laksono, said that the demonstrations rejecting the revision of the TNI Law were caused by a lack of understanding of the substance of the changes.

According to him, the interpretations that have developed in society regarding the law are often wrong, and he emphasized that this revision actually limits the TNI in filling civilian positions.

“I see that there are communication barriers, what is the content, the final draft has not been received,” said Dave.

Dave also explained that the revision of the TNI Law allows the TNI to fill 14 civilian positions, but outside of that, active TNI must resign or retire. He added that the draft of the new law should be accessible on the official DPR website to prevent unfounded concerns.

In addition, the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, assessed that the revision of the new TNI Law would not restore the era of ABRI’s dual function as in the New Order era.

“It is not true that this will return to the New Order era of ABRI’s dual function,” said AHY.

According to him, the revision actually limits the space for TNI officers to enter civilian positions, which should clarify the role of the TNI in accordance with existing laws.

On the other hand, discussions on the revision of the Polri Law are also in the spotlight.

On May 29, 2024, the revision of the Polri Law was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives, but further discussions will only be continued in the administration of President Prabowo Subianto.

However, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized that until now, her party had not received a presidential letter (surpres) regarding the revision.

“There has been no surpres, we will see again,” said Puan.

The debate regarding the revision of the TNI Law and the Polri Law shows the tension between the government, the DPR, and the community.

If not managed well, this tension has the potential to disrupt the national stability that has been built so far.
