Optimization of Infrastructure as a Key Step Toward Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto’s administration has placed energy self-sufficiency as one of the top priorities in the national development agenda. In an effort to achieve sustainable energy security, optimizing energy infrastructure is a strategic step that must be carried out comprehensively and in an integrated manner.
As energy demand continues to rise across various sectors such as industry, transportation, and households, the government recognizes the importance of strengthening modern and efficient energy infrastructure. This includes the development and revitalization of electricity networks, energy storage facilities, and the optimization of renewable energy utilization.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot Tanjung, stated that the government continues to develop hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) in existing dams. The construction of dams must be maximized, including their use as electricity sources to support national energy security.
“We want dams to play a role in achieving energy self-sufficiency in line with Asta Cita. Therefore, various steps need to be taken to maximize the utilization of dams,” said Yuliot.
Additionally, strengthening the electricity distribution network in remote areas and outer islands remains a serious concern. The government aims to increase electricity transmission capacity, build smart grids, and adopt digital-based energy management systems to improve distribution efficiency.
Deputy Minister of Public Works (PU), Diana Kusumastuti, stated that in realizing energy self-sufficiency, the government will also optimize the use of domestic natural resources, such as natural gas and coal, processed with environmentally friendly technology.
“This initiative aims to reduce dependence on energy imports and enhance national industrial competitiveness. This step is expected to reduce reliance on imported energy while boosting the competitiveness of domestic industries,” said Diana.
Acting Director for Planning and Development of Priority Infrastructure Projects at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Sumedi Andono Mulyo, mentioned that from a regulatory perspective, the government is preparing more flexible and adaptive policies to attract investment in the energy sector.
“With more adaptive policies, we hope investors can more easily participate in the development of national energy infrastructure. This aims to create a more conducive and sustainable investment climate,” said Sumedi.
The private sector also plays a crucial role in advancing energy self-sufficiency through innovation and investment. Companies such as PT ARSynergy NiX Indonesia have introduced new technologies to enhance energy efficiency. The company recently launched ArsyGas, an LPG product equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology to ensure better quality control and distribution accuracy. This technology allows real-time monitoring of LPG content and distribution, improving energy reliability.
Furthermore, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) continues to strengthen gas infrastructure by expanding its pipeline network to over 33,000 km and developing LNG terminals to ensure a stable energy supply. PGN’s efforts contribute significantly to reducing dependence on imported fuel while supporting industrial growth.
Abadi Purnomo, a member of the National Energy Council, emphasized that while renewable energy development remains a priority, natural gas will continue to play a vital role in supporting industry and power generation. He highlighted the need for a balanced energy transition that ensures economic and industrial stability.
“We hope that in the coming years, Indonesia can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy while maintaining economic and industrial stability,” said Abadi.
With these various initiatives and support from both the government and private sector, Indonesia is increasingly optimistic about achieving energy self-sufficiency. Innovation in technology and strengthening energy infrastructure remain key factors in ensuring long-term national energy security and sustainability.
