Papuan Leaders Condemn OPM’s Separatist Violence, Reaffirm Commitment to Peace

Papua — The recent surge in armed violence by the separatist group Free Papua Organization (OPM) in Central Papua has sparked strong condemnation from local leaders and regional officials. They argue that OPM’s actions not only disrupt security but also violate the humanitarian and religious values deeply held by the Papuan people.

During a recess visit to Nabire, Deputy Speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), Yorrys Raweyai, expressed concern over the violence occurring in areas such as Puncak, Intan Jaya, and Dogiyai. According to him, OPM’s attacks have instilled widespread fear among residents. Public facilities such as schools and hospitals have been forced to shut down, leaving citizens—especially children—without access to education or a clear vision of their future.

“We expect all regional government elements to work together in synergy and collaboration to address the situation in Central Papua,” said Yorrys.

Meanwhile, Reverend Eduard Su, Chairman of the Baliem Yalimo Klasis, condemned the OPM’s assault on a church under construction. He called the attack a desecration of a holy site and a crime against humanity that has crossed all lines. Reverend Eduard urged the Papuan people to unite in rejecting terror and upholding the values of peace.

“The church is a symbol of peace, not a battlefield. The murder of two individuals building the house of God is an act of savagery,” he stated.

Jayawijaya Deputy Regent Ronny Elopere echoed these sentiments, asserting that OPM’s actions are not part of a legitimate struggle for independence, but rather acts of terror targeting fellow indigenous Papuans.

“We will not stay silent. This is terrorism. We will work closely with the military and police to thoroughly investigate and restore public safety,” Ronny emphasized.

Another prominent Papuan church leader, Socratez Yoman, expressed his support for President Prabowo Subianto’s development programs and offered prayers for the president’s strength in fulfilling his duties. He expressed hope that national leadership will bring about peaceful and just solutions for the Papuan people.

Solidarity among regional leaders, religious figures, and the Papuan public is seen as a crucial force in rejecting violence and restoring hope for a secure, peaceful, and dignified future in the Land of Papua.
