Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has again shown Indonesia’s active role in international affairs, especially in efforts to bring about peace in Palestine and reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

On various occasions, the President always emphasizes Indonesia’s commitment to diplomatic solutions, as well as highlighting this country’s important position as a driver of world peace and consistent in fighting for global stability and human rights.

During Pope Francis’ recent visit to Indonesia, President Jokowi raised the importance of a two-state solution as a concrete step to resolve the Palestinian conflict.

“Yesterday, we talked with the Pope a lot about matters related to world peace, we touched on the importance of a two-state solution for resolving the conflict in Gaza, Palestine,” explained President Jokowi.

This approach further emphasizes Indonesia’s strong support for Palestinian independence, which has been continuously fought for on the international stage.

In recognition of this dedication, Palestine awarded President Jokowi its highest award, the Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine. This shows that under President Jokowi’s leadership, Indonesia remains consistent in supporting the Palestinian struggle in various global forums, including in pushing for full recognition of Palestine at the United Nations (UN).

Apart from that, President Jokowi played a role in encouraging the achievement of peace amidst the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Indonesia is considered to be one of the countries that has significant influence in supporting diplomatic solutions. Indonesia’s support for the peace proposal initiated by China and Brazil last May is a concrete manifestation of this commitment.

The proposal puts forward diplomacy as the only way to reach a peaceful solution between Russia and Ukraine, which also has support from other countries, including South Africa. In this context, Indonesia as part of the global South countries is considered to play an important role in reducing conflict escalation.

China’s Special Representative for Eurasia, Li Hui, even called Indonesia one of the countries that is actively pushing for a peaceful solution and rejecting foreign military involvement that could worsen the situation in Ukraine.

“South Africa and Indonesia have supported the proposed plan,” Li said.

Through these various steps, President Jokowi’s leadership has succeeded in strengthening Indonesia’s position on the international stage. President Jokowi has not only demonstrated his commitment to humanitarian issues such as Palestine, but also in handling more complex conflicts such as Russia-Ukraine, where Indonesia continues to encourage diplomacy as the main path to peace.
