Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC), held from May 12 to 15, 2025, at the Indonesian Parliament Building in Jakarta, raised the issue of good governance as a key agenda.

Carrying the theme “PUIC Silver Jubilee – Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” this conference marks the 25th anniversary of PUIC’s establishment since 1999 in Tehran.

The Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Body (BKSAP), Mardani Ali Sera, emphasized the importance of implementing good governance in OIC member countries.

“We want to demonstrate that Indonesia is not just a hospitable host, but also offers tangible contributions on how good governance and strong institutions can be broadly applied in Islamic countries,” he said.

According to Mardani, the theme was chosen because most OIC members are still in the process of development.

Mardani mentioned that Indonesia also invited the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia to share their experiences in building credible institutions and accountable governance systems.

“When we meet again in the next forum, we hope we will be countries with stronger foundations: transparency, accountability, and fair governance,” he added.

The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, stated that the conference is a strategic moment that reflects Indonesia’s leadership in Islamic diplomacy.

“Hosting PUIC 2025 is not just about organizing an event but also demonstrating Indonesia’s moral leadership in the Islamic world,” said Puan.

She emphasized that the Indonesian House of Representatives is ready to be a bridge for cooperation among parliaments of Islamic countries in addressing global challenges, including the Palestinian struggle and humanitarian crises.

“This PUIC is not just a ceremony, but a forum for generating concrete solutions based on parliamentary collaboration,” she stated.

Puan also referred to the timing of PUIC 2025, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Asia-Africa Conference. She hoped that the spirit of South-South solidarity could be revived through this forum.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Indra Iskandar, ensured that the technical preparations for the conference had been thoroughly carried out.

“Coordination with various agencies has been completed. There are no gaps left open,” he stressed.

So far, more than 500 participants from member states and international organizations have confirmed their attendance at the conference, which aims to strengthen the role of Islamic world parliaments in global development.
