PUIC 2025 Kicks Off, Indonesian Parliament Emphasizes Concrete Cooperation Among Islamic Countries

Jakarta – The 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) officially began on Monday (May 12) at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta. The event, which runs until May 15, also marks the 25th anniversary of PUIC’s founding.
Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, stated that hosting PUIC is a significant moment to reinforce Indonesia’s role in Islamic world diplomacy.
“This is a great honor for Indonesia. DPR RI is ready to warmly welcome all delegates while reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to Islamic world diplomacy,” said Puan.
She emphasized that hosting PUIC is not merely an administrative status but a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to demonstrate leadership on global issues and foster harmony among nations.
“It is essential to uphold the values of humanity, solidarity, and mutual understanding in building a more harmonious world order,” Puan added.
Carrying the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” Puan said the topic is highly relevant to the needs of OIC member states.
“This forum will not be merely ceremonial. We aim to ensure concrete outcomes from our discussions, followed by real action through inter-parliamentary cooperation,” she stressed.
Puan also noted that this year’s conference carries a special meaning as it coincides with the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Asian-African Conference.
“The spirit of Bandung 1955 remains relevant today. PUIC serves as a platform to strengthen South-South global solidarity,” she remarked.
Previously, Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, stated that the Indonesian parliament would push for discussions on several key issues, including strengthening the participation of women and youth, sustainable development, and the environment.
“We will highlight sustainable development and environmental collaboration among OIC countries and promote more tangible inter-parliamentary partnerships,” he said.
DPR RI has also prepared the Senayan Declaration, which will serve as the main outcome document of the conference.
The PUIC sessions are scheduled to proceed intensively over the next four days, with participation from parliamentary leaders of OIC and ASEAN countries.
