Supporting the Tightening of School Security in Papua to Prevent OPM Disruptions

PAPUA – Security forces have intensified protection at schools in Papua following threats from the Free Papua Movement (OPM) against educational facilities implementing the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program.

This measure was taken in response to the potential security disturbances that could hinder the educational process and stability in the region.

Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Hariyanto, emphasized that securing schools in high-risk areas is a top priority.

“Security for educational facilities, including schools in areas prone to OPM activity, is a serious concern for the TNI,” he stated.

Hariyanto explained that TNI is working in collaboration with the National Police and local governments to enhance security and provide a sense of safety to the community, particularly educators and students.

He further added that routine patrols have been increased in vulnerable areas, and preventive measures continue to be implemented to anticipate any disruptions to stability and the educational process.

“TNI is adopting a measured and humane security approach, always prioritizing the protection of civilians,” he added.

In line with this, Presidential Communication Office Head Hasan Nasbi emphasized that OPM’s threats will not stop the implementation of the MBG program in Papua.

“MBG is a universal program implemented across all regions of Indonesia, including Papua. If there are such threats, they will face TNI/Polri,” Hasan stated in a written message from Jakarta on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin emphasized that MBG is a humanitarian program that will not be affected by political issues.

“Since the situation is still not ideal and conducive, we need to ensure that the kitchens are managed by TNI’s territorial task forces,” he said.

Efforts by security forces to increase school security have received full support from various parties.

With firm and measured actions, it is hoped that stability in Papua will be maintained and education for the younger generation can continue without disruption.
