The 19th PUIC Conference Inspires Improvement in Parliamentary Governance in Islamic Countries

Jakarta – The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) officially opened the 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (May 12). This international event, which will run until May 15, 2025, is attended by parliamentary representatives and secretariat generals from various Islamic countries. It serves as a strategic forum to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of ideas among OIC member parliaments.
Secretary General of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Indra Iskandar, emphasized that this meeting is not just a diplomatic ceremony, but an important moment for participating countries to share knowledge, experience, and innovations to support a more modern and responsive parliamentary governance system.
“This forum is expected to inspire each OIC member country. The exchange of ideas will encourage all of us to continue improving governance in supporting parliaments,” said Indra after leading the 6th Meeting of the Association of Secretaries General of Member Parliaments, one of the PUIC’s agenda items, at the Nusantara II Building, Senayan.
During the meeting, the secretaries general of member parliaments exchanged views on best practices in providing administrative and technical support to their respective legislative bodies. Indra mentioned that the focus of the Secretariat General of the Indonesian House of Representatives is on strengthening the parliamentary support system, including digital transformation, human resource development, and enhancing institutional expertise.
“For the Secretariat General, our focus is on how to provide the best support system for the parliament. As for substantive issues, those will be discussed in the commission sessions that will begin tomorrow,” he explained.
Furthermore, Indra stated that the substance of the discussions in the PUIC forum will be focused on the commission sessions tasked with identifying and formulating crucial issues in the Islamic countries’ region. He emphasized that strategic decisions will be made through a deliberative process in the official forum.
As the host, Indonesia has the honor of leading one of the important sessions in the conference. Indra led and opened the 6th Meeting of the Association of Secretaries General of Member Parliaments, presenting the views of the Secretariat General of the Indonesian House of Representatives on strengthening the role of administrative support for the parliament.
“As the host, I chair, lead, and open the session. I also presented our strategic steps in providing the best support to the parliament in Indonesia,” he stated.
The 19th PUIC Conference is an event that brings together not only legislators but also professionals behind the scenes of parliaments, aiming to build synergy and cooperation across Islamic countries.
Indra hopes that the conference held in Jakarta will produce important decisions for strengthening the parliaments of OIC member countries.
“We hope that the PUIC meeting in Indonesia will lead to strategic decisions to strengthen the parliaments of Islamic countries in building world civilization and achieving global peace,” he concluded.
