Tightened Oversight: Government Successfully Reduces Online Gambling Transactions

Jakarta – The government’s decisive efforts to tighten oversight in the digital space have yielded positive results. The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) has recorded a significant decline in financial transactions related to online gambling.

In the first quarter of 2025, online gambling transactions were valued at IDR 47 trillion, a drastic drop from IDR 90 trillion in the same period the previous year. This decline reflects the government’s commitment to combatting one of the serious threats in the digital world.

The Director General of Digital Space Oversight at Kemenkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, stated that strengthening oversight measures and cross-agency collaboration were key to reducing these transactions.

“Online gambling transactions have dropped significantly, by more than 80% compared to last year’s data,” Alexander said while giving a statement at the Kemenkomdigi office.

According to Alexander, this decline is the result of intensive collaboration with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), law enforcement agencies, and other ministries and institutions. He emphasized that the government is not only focused on blocking content but also continues to strengthen infrastructure and oversight management by utilizing the latest technologies.

“We continue to make efforts to reduce public exposure to this practice. Adaptive and data-driven oversight is our main weapon,” he added.

However, the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, reminded that the fight against online gambling still has a long way to go. She emphasized the importance of regulatory improvements that are not only responsive but also systematic and sustainable.

“We still have much work to do. Going forward, our focus will not only be on enforcement and content blocking but also on improving regulations to make them more systematic and sustainable,” Meutya explained in her written statement.

Meutya also expressed appreciation for all elements of society who have actively contributed to the fight against online gambling. Public support, according to her, is crucial to raising collective awareness that this practice harms the future of the nation, especially the younger generation.

This success serves as a strong signal that the national strategy for combating online gambling is on the right track. By continuously strengthening cross-sector synergies and prioritizing technology-based approaches, the government is optimistic it can create a healthier, safer, and more productive digital space for all levels of society. Ongoing public support will be a crucial foundation for maintaining the consistency and effectiveness of policies moving forward.
