Young Papuan Leader Calls for Peace and an End to TPNPB Violence in Jayawijaya
Papua – A strong statement was delivered by Charles Kossay, a young intellectual leader from the Papua Highlands, in response to the recent wave of violence in Papua, particularly the shooting of construction workers at a GKI church in Air Garam, Asotipo District, Jayawijaya Regency, allegedly carried out by the armed group TPNPB.
“Acts of violence such as the shooting of civilians, workers, teachers, and even medical personnel are inhumane and violate human rights. These actions can never be justified under any circumstances,” said Charles Kossay.
He stated that separatist group activities in regions such as Yahukimo, Intan Jaya, and Puncak have caused deep trauma among local communities. As a result, many residents are afraid to engage in daily activities—from farming and going to the office to participating in social life, which has been severely disrupted.
Kossay called on the TPNPB group to immediately cease all forms of violence against civilians. He emphasized that teachers and healthcare workers are humanitarian professionals who come to Papua to help the people—not to become targets of violence.
“We cannot continue to lose innocent lives because of the ambitions of a few. Murder is intolerable. It is a grave violation that goes against all humanitarian values,” Kossay stressed.
In his statement, Charles Kossay also urged Papuans to support law enforcement measures being carried out by security forces in accordance with legal procedures. He stressed that law enforcement must prioritize a human-centered approach so the public can feel safe and protected.
Kossay also encouraged all stakeholders—including traditional leaders, religious figures, and youth—to actively promote peace and become mediators who foster unity. According to him, collaboration between communities and law enforcement is essential to quickly restoring order in conflict-prone areas.
“We must join hands—not only to reject violence—but also to build a peaceful and prosperous future for Papua,” said Kossay.
He warned the public not to be easily provoked by narratives circulating on social media or messaging groups that are intended to divide communities and incite unrest.
For this reason, he called on all Papuans to continue supporting development programs being implemented by the central, provincial, and district governments. He believes public support is the key to achieving a peaceful, safe, and prosperous Papua.
