President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Session in Nusa Dua Bali. The event, which brings parliamentary delegations from all over the world, will last until March 24 with various agendas discussing various global issues, especially climate change.

In his remarks, Jokowi reminded that the global challenges faced in the future are not getting easier, but increasingly difficult, especially with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupts all things that were previously unthinkable, but can now be felt.

In front of the IPU participants, Jokowi stated that the scarcity of energy, the increase in food prices, the scarcity of logistics deliveries and the increase in inflation that occurred in almost all countries, made it difficult for the people to reach price increases.

President Jokowi invites to be brave enough to mobilize policies, both in parliament and the government regarding climate change issues.

“We must not forget that we are facing a terrible thing if we do not dare to mobilize policies both in parliament and in the government, namely climate change,” said Jokowi.

Jokowi said that to prevent climate change, the parliament must mobilize various policies accompanied by concrete actions on the ground.

“What must be mobilized is climate finance, investment in renewable energy, and those related to technology transfer,” said Jokowi.

Jokowi said that Indonesia has a lot of potential for renewable energy, from hydro power, geothermal with a potential of 29,000 Megawatts, lots of wind, lots of underwater currents, very abundant solar energy. But global climate investment, technology transfer and finance must be seriously supported by the international community.

To note, Indonesia is indeed rich in sources of New and Renewable Energy (EBT), many of which have been utilized but not optimally. Indonesia’s NRE potential is an opportunity to realize the energy transition, from fossil energy to NRE or renewable energy. Of course, to realize real action to prevent climate change, a large investment is needed.

It is hoped that with the 144th IPU Session taking place, the delegates can come up with decisions and concrete actions that can be implemented.

The opening of the 144th Session of The Inter-Parliamentary Union was held at Mangupura Hall, Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Badung Regency, Bali Province, attended by delegates from 115 IPU countries. In addition, this international parliamentary forum was also attended by leaders of international organizations, experts and practitioners as resource persons for the session. (red-)
