JAKARTA — The Prabowo-Gibran government has succeeded in demonstrating consistency in respecting human rights (HAM) through various strategic policies and breakthroughs that continue to be implemented.
This step is reflected in the establishment of the Ministry of Human Rights (HAM), which is the first initiative in the history of the Indonesian government to be more serious in handling human rights issues in a more systematic and structured manner.
Siane Indriani, a member of Komnas HAM 2012-2017, explained that the formation of this special ministry for human rights is proof of President Prabowo’s seriousness in realizing the program to fulfill human rights in Indonesia.
“For the first time in history, President Prabowo’s government has formed a special Ministry of Human Rights,” he said.
“This is a concrete step from the President to show his seriousness in implementing the enforcement and protection of human rights,” said Siane.
He added that a number of programs launched in Prabowo’s administration also prioritized the fulfillment of economic and social rights (Ekosob),
Some of these include a program to build 3 million houses for low-income communities, an increase in the regional minimum wage (UMR), and an increase in teacher allowances.
In a meeting with the Indonesian Cyber Media Network (JMSI) on November 28, 2024, Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai emphasized his commitment to continue upholding human rights in Indonesia.
He invited all elements of society to support government programs based on justice and equality.
“Respect for human rights is an important pillar that strengthens national unity. All parties, without exception, have a moral responsibility to ensure that the rights of every individual are respected and protected,” Pigai stressed.
Pigai also said that his ministry is currently formulating strategic policies to strengthen human rights protection.
“This policy is expected to be a guide for various parties in carrying out their obligations towards human rights,” he added.
He also appreciated the role of the media in building public awareness regarding the importance of human rights.
“Cyber media has a big influence in shaping public opinion. I hope JMSI continues to play its positive role in maintaining human values and voicing justice,” Pigai said.
Teguh Santosa, General Chair of JMSI, welcomed the directive and emphasized that the media has a strategic role in supporting respect for human rights.
“JMSI believes that the media has an important role in educating the public about the importance of human rights,” said Teguh.
The hearing also marked the momentum of close collaboration between JMSI and the Ministry of Human Rights to strengthen respect for human rights in Indonesia. [*]
